A unique festival dedicated to plucked strings
Since 2001, the International Festival of Plucked Strings has been a must-attend event for lovers of world music in the Centre-Val de Loire region. This original festival explores the rich sounds of plucked string instruments from all musical traditions: Arabic oud, medieval lute, classical and flamenco guitar, mandolin, African kora, Indian sitar, qanun, bouzouki, and many others. Each edition is an invitation to travel through the sounds of the entire world.
A bridge between learned music and popular tradition
The uniqueness of the Festival of Plucked Strings lies in its approach that blends learned music and popular traditions with tolerance and conviviality. The programs of the various editions feature ensembles of Arab-Andalusian music, soloists of Oriental music, as well as groups playing Western classical music or acoustic progressive rock. This diversity is the richness of a festival that rejects divisions and celebrates the universality of music.
The Ockeghem Hall, an exceptional venue
The festival takes place at the Salle Jean de Ockeghem, a music and vocal space located in the former 15th-century Saint-Denis church, at 15 Place Châteauneuf in Tours. This heritage site offers exceptional natural acoustics, perfectly suited to the subtle sounds of plucked string instruments. Situated in the heart of Tours' historic district, near the famous Place Plumereau, it provides an ideal setting for these intimate concerts.
A high-level international program
Over its 24 editions, the festival has hosted internationally renowned musicians and ensembles. The 2025 edition notably features La Zonda (South American and Balkan traditions), the Quintet Al Andalus / Samai (lutes, double bass, percussion), the Ensemble El Ouns & Abdelali Bouayoune (Lebanese music), the Ensemble Watar (Palestinian music), and Anass Benmoussa (Egyptian and Syrian music). Each year, the festival brings together artists from Spain, the Maghreb, the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe.
