Contemporary art and religious heritage in the Blavet valley
Created in 1992, L'Art dans les Chapelles is a unique contemporary art event that invites national and international artists each summer to occupy remarkable chapels in the Blavet valley and the Pontivy region. This dialogue between contemporary creation and religious heritage from the 15th and 16th centuries offers a singular artistic experience in an exceptional rural and heritage setting. For two months, from July to the end of August, visitors can discover the works created in situ in a dozen chapels, free of charge, along an artistic trail through the Breton landscape.
Since 1992, L'Art dans les Chapelles has created a unique dialogue between contemporary art and Breton religious heritage. Each summer, nationally and internationally renowned artists are invited to create works in situ in remarkable chapels in the Blavet valley and the Pontivy region, most of which were built between the 15th and 16th centuries.
The exhibition unfolds in a dozen chapels scattered throughout the rural landscape of central Brittany. Visitors are invited to explore the area at their own pace, discovering artistic interventions that transform these sacred buildings into living art spaces along the paths and through the villages. This itinerant artistic trail offers a dual discovery: that of contemporary art and that of an often-overlooked architectural heritage.
Each invited artist creates a work specifically designed for the architecture and spirit of the chapel that hosts them. Installations, sculptures, paintings, videos, sound works: the forms of expression are multiple and dialogue with the volumes, light, materials, and history of each place. This site-specific approach gives rise to often striking aesthetic encounters.
L'Art dans les Chapelles plays a major role in the enhancement of Breton rural heritage and in the cultural influence of central Brittany. The event contributes to the restoration and maintenance of the chapels, raises public awareness of Breton religious architecture, and boosts the region's tourism economy.
Guided tours, educational workshops for schoolchildren, and meetings with artists enrich the program. A welcome point is set up at Les Bains-Douches in Pontivy, where visitors can obtain the trail map and information about the exhibiting artists.
The 35th edition of L'Art dans les Chapelles will take place from July 3 to August 31, 2026. New artists will occupy the chapels for a renewed dialogue between contemporary art and Breton heritage.
