Medieval festival at the 13th-century stone mill, one of the oldest windmills in France
The Hauville stone mill is an exceptional monument of Norman heritage. Built in the 13th century by the monks of the Abbey of Jumièges, it is one of the oldest windmills in France still standing. Used to grind grain until the 1870s, it has been restored and stands proudly in the heart of Roumois, in the Eure department. It is in this unique heritage setting that La Médiévale au Moulin de Hauville takes place every summer, a festival that brings the Middle Ages back to life at the foot of this centuries-old building.
The Fiers Normands company, a Norman historical reenactment troupe, is at the heart of the animation of this medieval day. They set up a real medieval camp at the foot of the mill, recreating daily life in the Middle Ages with great authenticity. Visitors can observe the medieval cuisine prepared over a wood fire, attend combat demonstrations with swords and shields, and admire the prowess of a fire-breather who punctuates the day with impressive pyrotechnic shows.
Demonstrations of medieval crafts are one of the major attractions of the event. Visitors discover the ancestral techniques of weaving on a loom, the secrets of medieval hairstyling, and the gestures of medieval artisans. These educational presentations provide an understanding of daily life in the Middle Ages and the skills that shaped Norman artisanal heritage. A craft market also offers creations inspired by the Middle Ages.
La Médiévale au Moulin de Hauville is designed as a family outing accessible to all. Medieval board games — chess, merelles, medieval snakes and ladders — and traditional outdoor games are available for visitors of all ages. Children can try their hand at camp activities and participate in the entertainment offered by the Fiers Normands company. Medieval catering allows you to taste the flavors of yesteryear in a friendly and good-natured atmosphere.
The Hauville mill is part of the rich heritage of Roumois, this natural region of Normandy located between the Seine and the Risle. Visiting the mill itself, with its grinding mechanism and explanations on grain milling, completes the medieval experience and offers a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity of the 13th-century builders. The event contributes to the promotion of this often overlooked rural Norman heritage.
The Medieval Festival at Hauville Mill returns on Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 10 am to 6 pm, at the foot of the 13th-century stone mill. The Fiers Normands company sets up its medieval camp for a day of family entertainment: fights, archery, initiation for budding knights, village games, and an artisan market. Food and refreshments available on site.
