La Rabastinhòla: Rabastens' Occitan Celebration
In Rabastens, a town of pink bricks at the gates of Occitan Tuscany, summer always begins the same way: with La Rabastinhòla. This free, intergenerational Occitan festival has established itself as one of the most vibrant cultural events in the Tarn region, bringing together lovers of the Occitan language, traditional music, dance, and sharing for three days.
A Festival in Occitan, for Everyone
The very name of the festival is a tribute to the local language: rabastinhòla means fauvette (warbler) in Occitan, a small songbird that enlivens the fields of the Taurais region. It's a perfect metaphor for an event that aims to make Occitan culture sing and accessible to all, from the youngest to the oldest. The festival is held annually in Place Auger Gaillard, in the heart of Rabastens' old town.
Music and Balèti: The Soul of the Festival
The beating heart of La Rabastinhòla is its open-air concerts and its balèti — traditional Occitan dances where people twirl to the sound of bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies, diatonic accordions, and flutes. Every evening, the square transforms into an open-air dance floor, where beginners and seasoned dancers alike whirl together to the rhythms of bourrée, polka, or trad waltz. The invited artists are carefully chosen for their deep roots in living tradition:
- La Talvera — a reference Occitan ensemble, a guarantor of the authenticity of the Languedoc repertoire
- Brick A Drac — an energetic and festive trad music group
- Los Escampilhats — groups dedicated to promoting Occitan music
- Adara, Frezinat, PRADEL, and other Occitan musicians complete the lineup
Dance Workshops and Participatory Activities
La Rabastinhòla doesn't just offer performances; it invites participation. Traditional dance workshops are offered during the day, led by experienced instructors, allowing newcomers to learn the basics of trad dance and experienced dancers to deepen their technique. Workshops for making unusual instruments allow children to discover music through creation. Occitan storytelling and theater performances are aimed at the younger audience.
Artisan Market and Occitan Gastronomy
A market of local artisans and producers occupies the square throughout the festival, offering handmade creations (jewelry, ceramics, textiles), local products (Gaillac wines, cheeses, cured meats, honey, jams), and items related to Occitan culture (books, records, instruments). Refreshment stands and snack bars offer regional specialties to enjoy between dances.
A Beret-Tossing Tournament and Other Surprises
Among the original activities, the beret-tossing tournament has become a classic at La Rabastinhòla, making young and old laugh in a typically Occitan atmosphere. Exhibitions and conferences on Occitan history and traditions complete the program for the curious.
Rabastens, the Ideal Setting for an Occitan Festival
Rabastens is a small town of 5,000 inhabitants on the banks of the Tarn River, known for its pink brick houses, its Notre-Dame du Bourg church, a UNESCO World Heritage site (13th-century Romanesque frescoes), and its Gaillac appellation vineyards. This setting, steeped in history and Occitan culture, makes Rabastens a particularly appropriate place to celebrate the language and traditions of Languedoc.
