The great classic of the Pyrenees
Created in the early 2000s, L'Ariegeoise Cyclosportive quickly established itself as one of the reference cycling events in France and Europe. Labeled UCI Golden Bike, it attracts over 5,000 cyclists each year, both amateurs and experienced riders, starting from Tarascon-sur-Ariege, a small Pyrenean town located at the crossroads of the Ariège, Vicdessos, and Sabart valleys. The event traditionally takes place on the last weekend of June, offering ideal climatic conditions for riding the Pyrenean mountain roads.
Routes for all levels
L'Ariegeoise offers several routes suitable for all types of cyclists:
- L'Ariegeoise: the main event, a route of 160 to 170 km with over 4,000 meters of positive elevation gain, crossing the legendary passes of the Ariège Pyrenees including the Plateau de Beille, the Port de Lers, and the Col d'Agnes.
- La Mountagnole: an intermediate route of approximately 120 km with significant elevation gain.
- Le Rapaillou: a shorter and more accessible route, ideal for sporty cyclists wishing to discover the Pyrenean landscapes.
- La Passejade: a tourist cycling ride open to all, to enjoy the scenery without the pressure of competition.
The legendary passes of the Ariège Pyrenees
The L'Ariegeoise route follows some of the most beautiful and demanding mountain roads in the Pyrenees. The Plateau de Beille, at 1,790 meters altitude, known to Tour de France fans, is one of the highest points of the event. The Port de Lers (1,517 m), the Col d'Agnes (1,570 m), and the Col de Latrape offer exceptional panoramas of the Pyrenean peaks, beech and fir forests, and the summer pastures where herds graze freely.
A festive and friendly event
Beyond the sporting challenge, L'Ariegeoise is a true festive event that enlivens Tarascon-sur-Ariege throughout the weekend. The start village hosts equipment stands, entertainment, and tastings of local products. The aid stations along the route, managed by enthusiastic volunteers, offer Ariège specialties. The finish in Tarascon is marked by music and festivities. The event is a major economic driver for tourism in Ariège, with thousands of participants and their companions discovering the region on this occasion.
