Jazz in the open in the barns, bistros, and gardens of Gâtine
Le Jazz bat la Campagne en Gâtine is a travelling jazz festival supported by CARUG, a rural animation collective active for over forty years in the Pays de Gâtine. From May to August, the "Commandos Jazz" take over barns, bistros, gardens, and village squares in the Deux-Sèvres region for free concerts blending jazz, blues, funk, soul, and afro-beat. The summer highlight takes place in July in Parthenay, on the banks of the Thouet river and under the plane trees of Place de la Nation, in a friendly atmosphere where music is shared alongside local produce and human encounters.
Born from the desire of CARUG (Collectif d'Animation Rurale Unicité Gâtine) to bring culture to rural areas, Le Jazz bat la Campagne is an atypical festival that rejects genre boundaries. Here, jazz is seen as "a galaxy with branches in all music": funk, soul, blues, afro-beat, Latin music, and improvisations of all kinds cross-pollinate and enrich each other throughout the concerts.
CARUG, which has been promoting live performance for over forty years in the Pays de Gâtine, invented a unique format with this festival: the "Commandos Jazz". From May to August, these free musical events take over the most unexpected places in the region — restored barns, countryside bistros, private gardens, village squares, farms — to offer the public intimate and warm musical encounters, far from the usual cultural distribution channels.
The festival's highlight takes place every year in July in Parthenay, a medieval town nestled in a loop of the Thouet river. For three days, the banks of the Thouet and the Place de la Nation, shaded by century-old plane trees, host open-air concerts featuring a mix of established artists, young talents, and local musicians. Spectators settle in freely, a glass of local wine in hand, to enjoy an eclectic and demanding program.
On-site catering, using local produce, is an integral part of the experience: the festival cultivates this philosophy of encounter and sharing that characterizes the spirit of Gâtine. Admission is completely free, in line with CARUG's mission to make culture accessible to all.
Le Jazz bat la Campagne embodies a model of committed rural festival. By bringing live music to communities sometimes far from cultural circuits, CARUG weaves a network of solidarity and conviviality that irrigates the entire Pays de Gâtine. Each "Commando Jazz" is an event in itself, co-created with residents, local associations, and municipalities, transforming a hamlet or village into a vibrant live jazz stage for an evening.
The festival's highlight takes place in Parthenay, on the banks of the Thouet river and Place de la Nation, in the town center.
From May to August, the "Commandos Jazz" take place in various towns in Gâtine. Locations and dates are announced on the official website and social media of CARUG. All concerts are free.
Completely free admission for all concerts, both the "Commandos Jazz" and the summer highlight. Refreshments and food available on-site featuring local produce.
