Les Couleurs du Jazz: Twenty-five Years of Free Music in Corbeil-Essonnes
Launched in 2000 by the city of Corbeil-Essonnes, the Les Couleurs du Jazz festival is an exceptional cultural event in the musical landscape of Essonne. Free and accessible to all, it transforms the city and its neighboring towns into open-air concert venues for an entire month, in the most unexpected places: public gardens, schoolyards, church naves, cafe terraces, and neighborhood theaters.
A Tribute to the Soldiers of Music
Les Couleurs du Jazz carries a special commemorative dimension. The festival pays tribute to the North American soldiers who were stationed in Corbeil-Essonnes after World War I and who helped introduce jazz to France. This history explains the city's deep attachment to this musical genre and gives the festival a unique identity, rooted in collective memory and gratitude towards those who sowed the seeds of improvised music on Essonne soil.
A Reference Artistic Lineup
Over its twenty-five editions, Les Couleurs du Jazz has hosted artists who have since become references on the French and international jazz and blues scene. Didier Lockwood, Manu Dibango, Dany Brillant, Jacky Terrasson, Michel Legrand, Martial Solal, Louis Sclavis, Aldo Romano, and Guy Marchand have all graced the festival's improvised stages. This high-quality programming, coupled with the complete freeness of the concerts, has allowed generations of Corbeil-Essonnais residents to discover jazz music under the best conditions.
A Month of Music in Freedom
The festival generally runs from mid-June to early July, offering about thirty concerts spread across the entire municipal and inter-municipal territory. Neighboring towns such as Étiolles, Le Coudray-Montceaux, Saint-Germain-lès-Corbeil, and Soisy-sur-Seine participate in the celebration, extending the festival's geographical reach far beyond Corbeil-Essonnes. This itinerant approach allows it to reach audiences who do not necessarily frequent concert halls and to bring music to the heart of neighborhoods.
Jazz, Blues, Gospel, and Beyond
Les Couleurs du Jazz is not limited to concerts. Each edition is accompanied by photographic exhibitions retracing the history of jazz or showcasing local photographers, film screenings related to the world of improvised music, and dinner concerts that allow attendees to experience music in an intimate atmosphere. This range of activities makes the festival a cultural event in its own right, extending far beyond the simple concert format.
