Summer festival at the Château de Maintenon, between nature and heritage
The Château de Maintenon, an architectural gem of Eure-et-Loir intimately linked to the history of Madame de Maintenon and Louis XIV, opens its doors wide every summer for its Estivales. This festival blends heritage, nature, and living culture in an exceptional setting, offering visitors unique experiences at dusk.
Every Saturday in July and August, the château offers its Flâneries Estivales, extended evening access until sunset. Visitors are invited to picnic by the water mirror, this majestic body of water that reflects the elegant silhouette of the château and the remains of the Maintenon aqueduct, an unfinished work desired by Louis XIV to supply the fountains of Versailles.
Thematic nature activities, organized in partnership with Eure-et-Loir Nature and the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux (LPO), punctuate these evenings. The themes vary from one Saturday to another: "The Song of Birds", "On the Trail of Wild Animals", "Edible Plants", or "Garden Birds", offering an original immersion into the biodiversity of the estate.
The highlight of the Estivales, the Festival Musiques et Danses du Monde takes over the castle gardens for a weekend in early August. This festival, celebrating its 15th edition, features a parade of international troupes through the streets of Maintenon, followed by music and dance performances in the castle park. Troupes from all over the world present their musical and choreographic traditions, creating a moment of intercultural exchange in the heart of Eure-et-Loir.
The Château de Maintenon, whose origins date back to the 13th century, reached its peak when Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon, the secret wife of Louis XIV, made it her residence. The French formal gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre, and the imposing arcades of the unfinished aqueduct create a spectacular backdrop that makes each summer evening a timeless moment.
The Estivales are part of the château's annual programming, which also includes winter events like L'Hiver aux Merveilles. This cultural dynamism makes the Château de Maintenon one of the most vibrant heritage sites in Eure-et-Loir, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year.
The 2026 Estivales of the Château de Maintenon unfold from July to mid-August with three highlights: the nocturnal Flâneries Estivales every Saturday evening, the nocturnal show projected onto the castle facades, and the World Music and Dance Festival in early August. A season marked by the 330th anniversary of the secret marriage of Louis XIV and Madame de Maintenon and the 400th anniversary of the birth of André Le Nôtre.
All summer, the Château de Maintenon and its French gardens redesigned by Le Nôtre host a summer season punctuated by nocturnal events, nature activities, and shows. The 2026 edition celebrates two anniversaries: the 330th anniversary of the secret marriage of Louis XIV and Madame de Maintenon and the 400th anniversary of the birth of André Le Nôtre.
Every Saturday evening, from July 12th to August 16th, 2026, the castle opens its gardens at night: picnic by the water mirror, free strolls, and nature activities offered in partnership with Eure-et-Loir Nature and the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO). Saturdays, July 12th, 19th, and 26th from 7 PM to 10 PM, then Saturdays, August 2nd, 9th, and 16th from 7 PM to 9:30 PM. Each evening explores a different theme (bird songs, tracks of wild animals, edible plants, garden birds...).
All summer, from Tuesday to Saturday starting at 9 PM (closed on August 2nd and 3rd), a nocturnal show traces the ascent of Françoise d'Aubigné, who became Madame de Maintenon, secret wife of the Sun King. Two actors guide spectators through the renovated French gardens, then three historical scenes are projected in video onto the facades of the Châtelet, the Loges, and the Donjon, in an immersive light and sound atmosphere.
From July 31st to August 2nd, 2026, the World Music and Dance Festival, organized by the Amis du Château association, brings together international folk troupes for a weekend of shows, parades, and concerts between Maintenon, Pierres, and Villiers-le-Morhier.
Every evening from Tuesday to Saturday starting at 9 PM (closed on August 2nd and 3rd): stroll through the French gardens then three scenes projected onto the castle facades, focusing on the life of Madame de Maintenon.
From July 31st to August 2nd, 2026: international folk music and dance troupes, parades and shows (Maintenon / Pierres / Villiers-le-Morhier).
