Classical and contemporary music in the heart of the Alpes de Haute-Provence
Founded in 2015 by pianist Nathalie Négro and the ensemble Piano and Co, Les Festivales des Alpes take over the village of Turriers every summer, nestled at 950 meters above sea level in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. For a week, between late July and early August, the festival reconciles classical music and contemporary creation in a preserved mountain setting. The village hall, the village square, and the surrounding churches become stages where trios, quartets, regional choirs, and street artists meet. Free public rehearsals, shows by the Compagnie du Petit Monsieur, and shared picnics make each edition a moment of conviviality and musical discovery accessible to all.
Created in 2015 by pianist Nathalie Négro, founder of the ensemble Piano and Co, Les Festivales des Alpes were born in the village of Turriers, a community of 300 inhabitants perched at 950 meters above sea level in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Born from the desire to bring scholarly music closer to rural mountain areas, this event offers a week of concerts, creations, and musical encounters between late July and early August each summer.
The festival is distinguished by its demanding program that blends classical repertoire and contemporary creation. Works by Rossini, Piazzolla, or Steve Reich are featured alongside pieces commissioned from living composers such as Jean-Michel Music Music Music, Kui Dong, and other creators invited to write specifically for the event. The performers — Trio Piano and Co, Quatuor Piano and Co, Trio Lazulis, Choeur régional Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and guest soloists — deliver high-quality performances in venues with remarkable acoustics.
Concerts take place in several emblematic sites of the region:
Beyond the concerts, Les Festivales des Alpes cultivate a spirit of celebration and sharing. The Compagnie du Petit Monsieur offers free street performances — burlesque sketches, parades, and performances — in the village square. Public rehearsals are open for free, allowing the public to discover the musicians' work before the concerts. Shared picnics bring together artists and festival-goers in a warm and relaxed atmosphere, true to the festival's spirit.
Supported by the association Piano and Co, a music production structure founded in 2003 by Nathalie Négro and recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Les Festivales des Alpes contribute to the influence of contemporary creation in rural areas. Each edition includes at least one commission to a composer, thus fostering the birth of new works in an environment conducive to inspiration. The festival benefits from the support of the Centre de documentation de la musique contemporaine (CDMC) and is part of the network of creation festivals in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
The festival mainly takes place at the village hall of Turriers and on the village square, in the commune of Turriers (04250), Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
Gîtes, bed and breakfasts, and campsites are available in Turriers and surrounding villages. Booking recommended during the festival period.
