Historical and fantastic show in the medieval streets of Ferrières-en-Gâtinais
Created in the early 1980s, Les Nocturnes de Ferrières is a living, medieval, and fantastic show that takes place on Saturday evenings in the summer in the historic center of Ferrières-en-Gâtinais. Nearly 500 volunteers bring the alleys of this small town in Gâtinais to life, offering a magical stroll where history meets legend. Organized by the Association des Fêtes Historiques de Ferrières and directed by Jean-Claude Baudoin, these four annual performances combine theater, music, pyrotechnics, and a Renaissance ball.
Since the early 1980s, Les Nocturnes de Ferrières has transformed the historic center of Ferrières-en-Gâtinais into an open-air theater each summer, blending history, fantasy, and magic. This itinerant and immersive show, directed by Jean-Claude Baudoin, invites the public to wander freely through the medieval streets of this small town in the Bocage gâtinais to encounter lords and peasants, fairies and witches, soldiers and jugglers.
Ferrières-en-Gâtinais boasts remarkable historical and architectural heritage, inherited from its royal Benedictine abbey Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul, founded in the 7th century and which became a major intellectual center during the Carolingian era. The town, perched on a promontory overlooking the Cléry valley, has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. It is this tumultuous history that Les Nocturnes strives to tell, using the authentic setting of the alleyways, squares, and monuments of the old town.
Each performance begins at 9:45 PM and continues until after midnight. Nearly 500 volunteer actors and professional troupes take over the historic center to offer a total spectacle: living statues, soldier patrols, jugglers, fire-eaters, musicians, acrobats, and storytellers animate every corner of the town. The public is free to move at their own pace, stop in front of scenes that capture their attention, follow a character, or be surprised around a bend in the alley.
The real blends with the fantastic: visitors relive lavish feasts and moments of horror, encounter fairy creatures and historical figures, in an atmosphere where the line between history and legend blurs.
Les Nocturnes take place on four Saturday evenings between mid-July and early August. Each evening concludes with a Renaissance ball and a fireworks display. A medieval market accompanies the performances, with artisans, stalls, and themed catering, including the Banquet and the famous Taverne du Diable.
Organized by the Association des Fêtes Historiques de Ferrières (AFHF), Les Nocturnes rely on the commitment of nearly 500 volunteers: actors, technicians, organizers, cashiers, and security personnel. The preparation of the four annual performances mobilizes these enthusiasts throughout the year, making this event a true collective project carried by the inhabitants of Ferrières and its surroundings.
The 2026 edition of Les Nocturnes de Ferrières will take place over four Saturday evenings: July 18 and 25, then August 1 and 8, 2026, in the historic center of Ferrières-en-Gâtinais. Nearly 500 volunteer actors will revive the history and legends of the medieval town through a fantastic itinerant show, followed by a Renaissance ball and fireworks.
