Festival of Bearnese culture in Morlaàs
Organized by the municipality of Morlaàs on the last weekend of August, the Les Pyrénéennes de Morlaas festival is a gathering of Bearnese culture and conviviality. For three days, this small town of character in the Béarn des Gaves region offers a market of local producers, a Bearnese fair, concerts of traditional and Occitan music, a flea market, a Gascon ball, and exhibitions. The festival celebrates Bearnese identity through its gastronomy, language, and musical traditions, in a popular and festive atmosphere.
The Les Pyrénéennes de Morlaas festival is an annual event dedicated to Bearnese culture in all its dimensions. Organized on the last weekend of August in Morlaàs, the former capital of Béarn, this popular festival brings together locals and visitors around the traditions, gastronomy, and music of the Pyrenean foothills.
The festival spans three days with a varied program that highlights the living heritage of Béarn. The market of local producers allows visitors to discover regional specialties — sheep cheeses, hams, spit cakes, Jurançon and Madiran wines. The Bearnese fair offers traditional games and entertainment for the whole family.
Music is at the heart of Les Pyrénéennes. Each edition features concerts of traditional Bearnese and Occitan music, with emblematic artists from the regional scene. The Sainte-Foy church of Morlaàs, a jewel of Bearnese Romanesque art, hosts concerts in an exceptional setting. The festival traditionally concludes with a Gascon ball led by traditional music groups, inviting all participants to dance to the rhythm of polkas, mazurkas, and rondòs.
Morlaàs was the capital of Béarn from the 11th to the 14th century, before Pau succeeded it. The town preserves remarkable vestiges from this glorious era, including the Romanesque portal of the Sainte-Foy church, a listed historic monument, considered one of the most beautiful in the region. The Les Pyrénéennes festival is part of this long history and contributes to the cultural dynamism of this small town of character.
On Sunday morning, the flea market on Place Saint-Foy attracts bargain hunters and strollers, while painting exhibitions are presented at the town hall throughout the weekend. A friendly aperitif on Sunday lunchtime brings participants together before the afternoon Gascon ball.
Les Pyrénéennes de Morlaas embodies a model of a local festival, rooted in its territory and driven by the commitment of its inhabitants and the municipality. This event contributes to the transmission of Bearnese culture to new generations and to the influence of Morlaàs beyond its borders.
Les Pyrénéennes de Morlaas will return on the last weekend of August 2026 for a new edition celebrating Bearnese culture with a local producer market, concerts, a flea market, and a Gascon ball.
