The flamenco festival of Lille
Lille Flamenca is a flamenco festival organized by the association Peña Estrella in Lille. In the form of 'Domingos Flamencos' (flamenco Sundays), the festival offers from October to March a season of shows, dance initiations, and sevillian balls accompanied live by musicians from COMPANŸA and the group LOS DE LA NOCHE. Founded by Patricia Wartelle, a pioneer of flamenco in Lille since 1984, and now directed by her daughter Estrella, the association perpetuates the passion for flamenco in the Lille metropolitan area.
Lille Flamenca is a unique festival in northern France, entirely dedicated to the art of flamenco. Organized by the association Peña Estrella, this festival unfolds over several months, from October to March, in the form of Domingos Flamencos – Sunday afternoons dedicated to flamenco dance, song, and music.
Every Sunday scheduled during the season, Lille Flamenca invites the public to experience an immersive flamenco afternoon from 3 PM to 5 PM. These regular gatherings help create a true community of flamenco lovers in Lille.
Domingos Flamencos features flamenco dance shows performed by the company's dancers and guest artists. The dance is accompanied live by musicians from COMPANŸA and the group LOS DE LA NOCHE, who interpret various flamenco styles: soleá, bulería, alegría, seguiriya, and many others.
Each Sunday includes a session for flamenco dance initiation, open to all levels. Participants discover the basics of compás (rhythm), palmas (hand claps), and the first dance steps. These workshops allow the audience to transition from spectator to participant and physically feel the energy of flamenco.
The afternoons conclude in style with a Bal Sévillan y Rumbas flamencas, a festive and convivial moment where everyone is invited to dance. Accompanied by live musicians, this popular ball creates a joyful and participatory atmosphere, in the spirit of Sevillian festivals.
The history of Lille Flamenca is inseparable from that of Peña Estrella, an association founded by Patricia Wartelle, nicknamed the 'Mama of Flamenco'. Since 1984, this enthusiast has worked tirelessly to keep the art of flamenco alive in Lille, establishing a dance school, organizing shows, and uniting a community of fans.
Today, the association is led by Estrella, Patricia's daughter, who carries on her mother's legacy with the same passion and dedication. Under her direction, Peña Estrella continues to offer dance, singing, guitar, and cajón classes throughout the year, making Lille a true hub for flamenco in northern France.
Lille Flamenca stands out for its commitment to making flamenco accessible to everyone. With a modest entrance fee of €5 per person (€2 for children aged 6 to 11), the festival democratizes access to an art form often perceived as elitist. The warm and participatory atmosphere of the Domingos Flamencos makes every Sunday a moment of sharing and cultural discovery.
