Classical and jazz concerts in the courtyard of the Commanderie de Jalès
Music'à Jalès is a classical and jazz music festival that takes place every summer in the open air in the courtyard of the Commanderie de Jalès, a former Templar commandery located in Berrias-et-Casteljau, in southern Ardèche. Founded in 2021, this musical event offers a concert every Wednesday evening in July and August in an exceptional heritage setting, combining musical discovery and the beauty of a listed historic site.
The Music'à Jalès program is divided between classical music and jazz, offering artistic diversity that appeals to a wide audience. On the classical side, the festival partners with Cordes en Ballade, a festival founded by the Quatuor Debussy, to host chamber ensembles, quartets, and trios performing repertoire from the 19th century and beyond. On the jazz side, the festival invites various formations, from gypsy jazz to Latin jazz, as well as Broadway standards and New Orleans music.
The 5th edition of Music'à Jalès, in 2025, featured six concerts from July 2 to August 6. In classical music, the audience could discover the Quatuor Isar, a saxophone quartet from the summer academy of the Quatuor Debussy, as well as the virtuoso Trio Ernest performing works by Amanda Maier, Edvard Grieg, and Félix Mendelssohn. In jazz, the Magnetic Orchestra accompanied by Lou Rivaille revived Broadway and Latin jazz standards, the duo Tom Ollendorf & Fabrice Tarel shared melodic and sensitive jazz, and the New Orleans Syndicate closed the season celebrating the music of New Orleans.
The Commanderie de Jalès, founded in the 12th century by the Templars, provides a unique setting for summer concerts. Its inner courtyard, open to the starry sky of southern Ardèche, offers natural acoustics and a magical atmosphere for open-air performances. This historic site, located between the Ardèche gorges and the Cévennes, fully contributes to the festival's identity, which combines architectural heritage and musical excellence.
Music'à Jalès stands out for its accessible pricing policy: 15 euros for full price, 12 euros for reduced price, 10 euros for teenagers aged 12 to 25, and free for children under 12. All concerts start at 8:30 PM, allowing spectators to enjoy the mild Ardèche summer evenings. This accessibility makes Music'à Jalès a musical event open to all, families and discerning music lovers alike.
