When literature illuminates the nights of La Charité-sur-Loire
La Nuit du Livre is a nocturnal literary event that enlivens the alleys of the Prieuré district in La Charité-sur-Loire, a designated City of Books, every first Saturday of August. Booksellers from La Charité and second-hand booksellers from elsewhere gather until late at night to offer readings, author encounters, shows, workshops, and concerts in a jazzy atmosphere. A magical evening celebrating literature under the stars, in the exceptional setting of this Cluniac priory, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
La Charité-sur-Loire proudly bears the label of City of Books, a rare distinction in France that attests to the exceptional concentration of bookstores, second-hand booksellers, and book-related activities in this small town in the Nièvre region. Nestled around its imposing Cluniac priory, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route, the town lives to the rhythm of books all year round, with a monthly antique book market and numerous literary events.
Every first Saturday of August, the Nuit du Livre transforms the medieval alleys of the Prieuré district into a vast open-air literary fair. Booksellers from La Charité, joined by second-hand booksellers from all over France, set up their stalls in the illuminated lanes, creating an enchanting and intimate atmosphere perfect for strolling, browsing, discovering, and exchanging.
The Nuit du Livre is not just about selling books. The program includes public readings by actors and authors, meet-and-greets with writers who share their worlds and passion, shows blending text and performance, writing or calligraphy workshops, and primarily jazz concerts that bathe the evening in a refined musical ambiance.
Visitors wander from one stall to another, from a reading to a concert, from an author encounter to a show, in a free and fluid journey that extends late into the night. The close proximity between authors, booksellers, and readers creates a conviviality and human warmth characteristic of this event.
The architectural setting of the La Charité priory, with its Romanesque arches, gardens, and vaulted passageways, gives the Nuit du Livre a unique poetic dimension. The soft light of lanterns and stage lighting highlights this exceptional heritage, offering visitors a sensory experience where literature, architecture, and music harmoniously intertwine.
