Wine evening and popular ball in the illuminated setting of the medieval town
Every first Saturday of July, Dambach-la-Ville celebrates its winegrowers and its prestigious Grand Cru Frankstein during the Nuit du Vin. In the magical setting of the illuminated medieval town, winemakers offer tastings of their best vintages while a variety band livens up a grand popular ball in the open air. From 6 p.m., flambé tarts sizzle and glasses of Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris are shared among friends in the Market Square. An iconic event on the Alsace Wine Route.
The Nuit du Vin is one of the most emblematic events in Dambach-la-Ville, a major wine-producing town on the Alsace Wine Route. Every year, on the first Saturday of July, the village's winegrowers open their best bottles to let visitors discover the treasures of the local terroir, particularly the wines from the prestigious Grand Cru Frankstein, an exceptional granite terroir that gives Rieslings and Gewurztraminers remarkable minerality and finesse.
The charm of the Nuit du Vin is largely due to its exceptional setting. The medieval town of Dambach-la-Ville, with its ramparts, fortified towers, and half-timbered houses, is adorned with special illuminations for the occasion. The cobbled streets, fountains, and Market Square are bathed in a magical atmosphere that transports visitors to a timeless world, between medieval heritage and living wine tradition.
The highlight of the evening is the grand popular ball, led by a variety band that keeps participants dancing until the early hours. This tradition of open-air balls, typically Alsatian, brings together all generations in a joyful and communicative atmosphere. Lively melodies echo between the ancient walls, creating a unique atmosphere that blends heritage and festivity.
From 6 p.m., the flambé tart (flammekueche) stands light up, and winegrowers set up their tasting tables. Visitors can discover and compare the different Alsatian grape varieties — Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Pinot Noir — produced on the surrounding hillsides. The Grand Cru Frankstein, the pride of Dambach-la-Ville, is particularly highlighted during this exceptional evening.
With its 460 hectares of vineyards, Dambach-la-Ville has the largest vineyard in Bas-Rhin. The town, founded in the 13th century, has preserved its medieval heritage while developing high-quality viticulture. The Nuit du Vin perpetuates this tradition by offering visitors an immersion into the Alsatian wine world, in a preserved historical setting.
