Open-air opera festival in the heart of Conflent
Opéra Mosset is an opera festival created in 2002 by the eponymous association in Mosset, a village in Conflent in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Each summer, between late July and early August, the association brings together amateurs and professionals passionate about opera to produce open-air operas in the castle square and concerts in the village church. With over 70 performances and 28,000 spectators since its creation, Opéra Mosset closely involves the inhabitants of Mosset and neighboring villages in its productions, mobilizing around 150 artists, technicians, and 90,000 volunteer hours per show.
Since 2002, the Opéra Mosset association has been pursuing an ambitious and unique artistic project: to make opera accessible to as many people as possible by presenting it outdoors, in the enchanting setting of the village of Mosset, in the heart of the Conflent valley in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Founded by opera enthusiasts, the association brings together amateurs and professionals each year to produce opera performances of remarkable quality.
The performances take place on the Place du Château in Mosset, transformed into an open-air opera stage with an exceptional natural backdrop: the mountains of Conflent as a backdrop, the medieval stones of the village as backstage. Concerts are held in the village church or in the churches of neighboring towns, offering acoustics and an atmosphere conducive to opera singing.
The strength of Opéra Mosset lies in its profoundly participatory nature. More than 20 municipalities in the region's valleys and plains are involved in the productions. The inhabitants of Mosset and neighboring villages actively participate: amateur singers, extras, costume designers, volunteer technicians. Each production mobilizes around 150 artists and technicians and represents nearly 90,000 volunteer hours.
Over the years, Opéra Mosset has presented a rich and varied repertoire, from baroque to romantic: Mozart's The Magic Flute, Rossini's The Barber of Seville, Offenbach's La Belle Hélène, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, among others. Each production is the culmination of several months of rehearsals and preparation, combining artistic excellence and a spirit of popular celebration.
