The great popular festival and the Pétassou of Périgueux
The Périgueux Carnival is a traditional popular festival that animates the capital of the Dordogne every year. Organized by the Périgueux Carnival Committee, this festive and family event brings together thousands of costumed participants for a colorful parade, a costume contest, confetti battles, and the emblematic cremation of the Pétassou, the traditional effigy symbolizing winter, burned on the banks of the Isle.
The Périgueux Carnival is one of the great popular festivals of the Dordogne. Every year, in spring, the Place de la Clautre and the streets of the historic center are transformed into a huge open-air theater where young and old parade in costume in a festive and colorful atmosphere.
The highlight of the carnival is the cremation of the Pétassou, the traditional effigy that symbolizes winter and hard times. After the grand parade through the streets of Périgueux, the procession heads to the banks of the Isle where the Pétassou is solemnly burned, symbolically marking the arrival of spring and warmer days.
The program includes a DJ set to kick off the festivities, a costume contest with prize giving, a giant confetti battle, creative and makeup workshops for children, as well as fairground rides on the Allées de Tourny. The event is completely free and open to all.
The Périgueux Carnival is a moment of sharing and conviviality, where popular traditions of Périgord blend with the creativity of the participants. Associations, schools, and families compete in imagination to create the most beautiful costumes and floats.
