Résurgence Festival
Contemporary art festival of Cauvaldor in Souillac
2026
About Résurgence
Résurgence — edition 2026
The 10th edition of the Résurgence festival, titled "Chose Publique" (Public Matter), runs from October 1st to November 22nd, 2026, across the Cauvaldor region in the northern Lot department. This year’s edition is dedicated to Gaston Monnerville (1897-1991), a French Guianese lawyer who became a senator for the Lot, mayor of Saint-Céré, and president of the Council of the Republic and later the Senate from 1947 to 1968. The collective contemporary art exhibition will feature nearly 130 works at the Beffroi Saint-Martin in Souillac from October 2nd to November 22nd, with free admission. The program also includes 17 satellite exhibitions and 131 cultural events across 43 municipalities in Cauvaldor and one in the Dordogne.
Résurgence X — Chose Publique
The 2026 theme focuses on democracy, citizenship, civil liberties, and public debate, echoing the upcoming municipal and 2027 presidential elections. The edition draws inspiration from Gaston Monnerville, born in French Guiana in 1897, the grandson of an enslaved person, who became a lawyer, deputy for French Guiana in 1932, and later Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1937-1938, where he successfully campaigned to close the Cayenne penal colony. A member of the French Resistance, he later served as senator for the Lot in 1948, president of the Lot General Council from 1951 to 1970, and mayor of Saint-Céré from 1964 to 1971.
The Collective Exhibition at the Beffroi Saint-Martin
"Chose Publique" brings together nearly 130 works by 87 artists and 6 collectives, including Ai Weiwei, Shepard Fairey (OBEY), Zanele Muholi, Claire Tabouret, Jacques Villeglé, Gregory Crewdson, Josèfa Ntjam, Adrian Paci, and César. The exhibition design follows the "St. Petersburg" hanging style, covering walls from floor to ceiling. Key themes include political engagement, youth and citizenship, social justice and gender equality, decolonization and anti-racism, the "capitalocene" and ecology, money and consumer society, media literacy, AI, and freedom of expression. The exhibition is curated by Valentine Boé, the festival's artistic director and head of cultural affairs for Cauvaldor. It is part of an inter-regional program dedicated to youth, coordinated by the Frac Nouvelle-Aquitaine MÉCA using its own collection; additional works are on loan from the artists, Les Abattoirs - Musée / Frac Occitanie Toulouse, Frac Poitou-Charentes, the Fonds d’art contemporain - Paris Collections, the Fondation d’entreprise Francès, the Lot Department and its artothèque, the Musée Henri-Martin in Cahors, and private collectors.
The 10th Anniversary Book
A 304-page book, "Festival Résurgence: 10 ans d’art contemporain en territoire Causses et Vallée de la Dordogne," chronicles the editions from 2017 to 2026 with contributions from around a hundred people. It will be sold for €25 at the Beffroi Saint-Martin starting October 1st, 2026, and can be ordered by mail for €36.32 including shipping (checks payable to Trésor Public, Cauvaldor service culture, 31 cour du Prieuré, 46110 Carennac). The launch party will take place on Friday, October 2nd, at 5:00 PM at the Palais des Congrès in Souillac.

Contemporary art at the heart of Lot heritage
Created in 2017 by the Causses et Vallée de la Dordogne (Cauvaldor) community of communes, the Résurgence festival is a unique cultural autumn event. Each edition highlights a part of the territory's history or a significant figure who left their mark in the north of the Lot, through the lens of contemporary art.
A festival rooted in the territory
The name "Résurgence" echoes the natural resurgences of the Dordogne valley, those underground springs that burst to the surface. In the same way, the festival brings forgotten stories, unknown personalities, and buried heritage of the Cauvaldor territory back to light. The main exhibition is held at the Beffroi Saint-Martin in Souillac, a former deconsecrated church listed as a historic monument since 1925, transformed into an exhibition space.
Strong themes from edition to edition
Since its creation, the festival has explored various ambitious themes:
- Sim Copans and the legacy of jazz in Souillac
- The Musée de l'Automate and its mechanical heritage
- Pierre Betz and the art review Le Point
- Nancy Cunard, an engaged poet who took refuge in the Lot (Infinie Liberté)
- The depths of the territory (Profonde Intuition)
- Architecture and housing (Construction Vivante)
- The link between art and sport (Sportive Attitude), in homage to Roger Couderc
- Exile and migration (Éternel Refuge), inspired by Gisèle Freund
A reach across the entire north of the Lot
Résurgence is not limited to Souillac: the festival extends to about thirty towns in the Cauvaldor territory, from Martel to Carlux, from Carennac to the grottes de Lacave. Each edition brings together over 90 partners — associations, museums, schools, sports clubs — and offers nearly a hundred cultural events: participatory workshops, guided tours, conferences, film screenings, artistic performances, and meetings with artists.
A commitment to all audiences
Entirely free and open to all, the festival places particular emphasis on cultural mediation and actions aimed at schoolchildren, families, and audiences far from culture. Adapted tours, creative workshops for children, and educational trails are offered throughout the program. Résurgence thus embodies the conviction that contemporary art can be a powerful vehicle for social connection and territorial discovery.
