The international meeting for war journalism in Bayeux
Created in 1994 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Normandy landings, the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents has become the most important European event dedicated to war journalism. Every year in October, the city of Bayeux hosts journalists, photographers, and reporters from around the world for a busy week of meetings, exhibitions, screenings, and debates on conflicts and human rights.
The award recognizes the best war reports in five categories: print, radio, television, photography, and web journalism. Seven trophies worth 7,000 euros each are awarded, in addition to three special prizes, including the Normandy Region Award for high school students, university students, and apprentices (3,000 euros). Around fifty reports compete each year, submitted to an international jury of media professionals.
Throughout the week, large-scale photographic exhibitions are set up in the streets, halls, and heritage sites of Bayeux. Screenings of competing reports are organized in the city's cinemas and halls. Public meetings with war correspondents allow the public to interact directly with those who bear witness to conflicts on the ground.
Each edition includes a moving ceremony for the unveiling of the memorial stele, engraved with the names of journalists and media collaborators killed in the line of duty during the past year. This memorial, located in Bayeux, is a unique place of remembrance in Europe.
The 33rd edition of the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents will be held from October 5 to 11, 2026, in Bayeux. A week-long tribute to great reporters, chaired this year by Lyse Doucet, star journalist for the BBC, featuring new exhibitions, debate evenings, documentary screenings, a book fair, and public meetings. Free admission.
The 33rd edition of the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents takes place from October 5 to 11, 2026 in Bayeux. For a week, international news is at the heart of numerous events: new exhibitions, debate evenings, documentary screenings, a book fair, and school meetings. Encounters and exchanges between the public and great reporters who, through their reports, bear daily witness to the world's violence. All events are freely accessible and free of charge.
The 33rd edition is chaired by Lyse Doucet, one of the famous faces and voices of the BBC. A Canadian journalist based in London since 1999, a correspondent in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and the Middle East, she herself was a laureate of the 2014 Bayeux Award (television category) for her report “Yarmouk” produced in Syria. She intends to place at the heart of the debates the question of how to tell the world in the age of artificial intelligence and social networks.
Seven awards are given by the international jury: Written Press Award (Département du Calvados, €7,000), Television Award (Amnesty International, €7,000), Radio Award (Comité du Débarquement, €7,000), Photo Award (Nikon, €7,000), Long-Format Television Award (Mémorial de Caen, €7,000), Young Reporter Award (Crédit Agricole Normandie, €3,000), and Video Image Award (Arte, France Médias Monde and France Télévisions, €3,000). In addition, there are three special awards: the Ouest-France – Jean Marin Award (written press, €4,000), the Public Award (photo, €3,000), and the Région Normandie Award for high school students and apprentices (television, €3,000).
The visual for the 2026 poster features a photograph from the award-winning report in 2025, a shot by Palestinian photojournalist Saher Alghorra (Zuma Press / The New York Times) showing Palestinian women attempting to obtain food at a charity canteen in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip.
