About Sun Ska

The Reggae Sun Ska, rebranded as the SunSka Festival in 2020, was born in 1998 in the Médoc region. Featuring reggae, ska, dub, rap, and world music, it stands as one of the longest-running events of its kind in France. After spending four years on the Bordeaux university campus, it returned in 2018 to the Domaine de Nodris in Vertheuil, where it was held until 2025.

There was no SunSka Festival in 2026. Because the Nodris site was never properly developed, the organizers cancelled the main event and replaced it with Le Plan B du SunSka, three nights of concerts held on May 29, 30, and 31, 2026, at Château Liouner in Listrac-Médoc. The festival has announced its return for its 30th anniversary in 2027, at a location yet to be disclosed.

There was no SunSka Festival at the Domaine de Nodris in 2026: the edition was cancelled in November 2025 as the Vertheuil site was never properly developed. The organizers replaced it with Le Plan B du SunSka, three nights of concerts held on May 29, 30, and 31, 2026, at Château Liouner, 10 route de Benon in Listrac-Médoc (33480), 35 km from Bordeaux. With a limited capacity, one indoor stage, and an outdoor area, the lineup featured Nèg'Marrons on Friday, Taïro on Saturday, and The Abyssinians on Sunday. The festival has announced its return for its 30th anniversary in 2027.

Le Plan B du SunSka, May 29-31, 2026

Le Plan B du SunSka took place from Friday, May 29 to Sunday, May 31, 2026, in the courtyard and gardens of Château Liouner, a vineyard owned by the Bosq family, located at 10 route de Benon in Listrac-Médoc. This was not the Domaine de Nodris in Vertheuil, where the festival had been held since 2018; the usual site did not host any events in 2026.

Why the 2026 edition was cancelled

The Domaine de Nodris was purchased by the Gironde Department in 2021, which co-signed a ten-year usage agreement with the festival, promising the sustainable development of a large-scale event area. After seven years at the location, including five under the agreement, the work had not been completed. In November 2025, the organization announced it was cancelling the 2026 edition: without the necessary infrastructure, the operating costs of an unequipped site were too risky for the organization, and late responses made it impossible to schedule the event in time. They indicated that these improvements will not be carried out at that site.

Three locations considered in six months

Le Plan B was initially announced in December 2025 for Cissac-Médoc, a town that hosted the festival between 2003 and 2009. The new municipal government deemed the administrative and technical guarantees insufficient for the planned capacity. A potential site in Saint-Estèphe was later ruled out for logistical reasons. Forty days before the event, the Bosq family opened Château Liouner with the support of the Listrac-Médoc municipality. Tickets already purchased remained valid for this new location.

Format

The event featured an indoor stage and an outdoor space called the Barrio, with a reduced capacity. Local producers provided food, and a bar was available on-site. Opening hours: Friday and Saturday from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM, Sunday from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM.

Access and accommodation

An event parking lot and a rest area were located across from the site. A mandatory detour from Bouqueyran was implemented to avoid the hamlet of Libardac, with signage and security personnel in place, as no passage through the village was permitted. The rest area, which was free and open to tents, provided access to restrooms but lacked electricity or charging stations; breakfast was available on-site, though no lunch service was provided. Camper vans were accommodated in the event parking lot. Five partner accommodations offered discounts to festival-goers: Tour Hotel in Lesparre, Camping Le Paradis in St-Laurent de Médoc, Hôtel Des Vignes et Des Anges in Pauillac, Les Murmures de la Vigne in Avensan, and the Domaine de Ludeye.

Organization

The festival is produced by SAS Sunbeats, in co-production with Music & Action Prod (performance licenses L-D-24-008217 and L-D-24-008216), with headquarters at Domaine de Nodris, 100 rue du Maquis, 33180 Vertheuil.

A reggae festival born in Médoc in 1998

The Reggae Sun Ska was one of the first French events dedicated to Jamaican music. It has changed locations several times: from its founding years in Cissac-Médoc between 2003 and 2009, to the Bordeaux university campus, which it left in 2018 after the mayors of Pessac, Talence, and Gradignan deemed the public crowds incompatible with the campus development plan. In 2020, it adopted the name SunSka Festival, with a lineup that has always blended reggae, ska, dub, rap, hip-hop, and French chanson.

The stages have hosted legends like UB40, Ky-Mani Marley, Steel Pulse, and Tryo for the 20th edition in 2017, which drew 65,000 spectators; SOJA, Jimmy Cliff, Chinese Man, Groundation, Naâman, and Touré Kunda in 2018; and Ziggy Marley, Morcheeba, Alpha Blondy, Patrice, Calypso Rose, and Tiken Jah Fakoly in 2019. The 25th-anniversary edition, held on August 5, 6, and 7, 2022, featured over 50 artists across 3 stages and sold out two out of three nights.

The Domaine de Nodris, from 2018 to 2025

The return to Médoc was part of a regional cultural project supported by the Médoc Regional Natural Park, 54 municipalities, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, the Gironde Department, and the Médoc Cœur de Presqu'île community of communes. The Department purchased the Domaine de Nodris in 2021 and co-signed a ten-year usage agreement, which included plans for the sustainable development of a large-scale event area. Seven years later, including five years under the agreement, these works had still not been completed.

In November 2025, the organization announced the cancellation of the 2026 edition: without proper facilities, operating an unequipped site was too costly for an already fragile structure. They clarified that these improvements would not be carried out at that location. Consequently, the Domaine de Nodris is no longer the festival's home.

2026: Le Plan B du SunSka in Listrac-Médoc

The replacement format was initially announced in December 2025 for Cissac-Médoc, then considered for Saint-Estèphe, before finally landing at Château Liouner in Listrac-Médoc just forty days before the event. It featured three nights of concerts on May 29, 30, and 31, 2026, with a reduced capacity, an indoor stage, and an outdoor area. Nèg'Marrons, Taïro, The Abyssinians, Lone Ranger, Flavia Coelho Soundsystem, and about a dozen other acts performed. The day-by-day schedule is available in the 2026 edition program.
