About Violoncelle de Bélaye

Founded in 1989 on the initiative of Mayor Camille Fauchie and Philippe Lagard, the Rencontres de Violoncelle de Bélaye brings together top-level cellists each year in early August around artistic director Roland Pidoux, in the medieval village of Bélaye perched above a meander of the Lot. Combining workshops-concerts open to the public and evening concerts, this unique festival has hosted over two hundred leading musicians in thirty-six editions, offering friendly and demanding access to chamber music.

The Rencontres de Violoncelle de Bélaye: A Village Dedicated to the Cello

In 1987, Camille Fauchie, the mayor of Bélaye, envisioned a cultural project to revitalize this small medieval village of 220 inhabitants perched above a meander of the Lot, about thirty kilometers west of Cahors. He entrusted Philippe Lagard with the mission of creating a sustainable and unifying event. On the advice of Pierre Bouteiller, the choice fell on Roland Pidoux, one of the most brilliant representatives of the French cello school. The association Les Rencontres de Bélaye was officially created on December 7, 1988, and the first edition of the festival took place in 1989.

An Original Concept Blending Seminar and Concert

What sets the Rencontres de Bélaye apart is its hybrid format, blending a seminar and a concert. Each year, during the first week of August, about fifteen top-level musicians—primarily cellists, but also violinists, violists, pianists, and other instrumentalists—gather around Roland Pidoux to work together. The afternoon workshops-concerts, open to the public in the Bélaye church, allow attendees to witness the rehearsals and exchanges between artists. The evenings are dedicated to concerts in the village square or in heritage sites like the Notre-Dame de l'Île chapel in Luzech.

A Popular and Demanding Festival

From the very first year, Roland Pidoux united energies and imposed uncompromising artistic standards while preserving the popular and friendly character of the event. Meals in the village square, workshops for children, exhibitions, and moments of sharing with the musicians are an integral part of the spirit of the Rencontres. The festival thus offers privileged access to high-level chamber music in a warm, rural setting.

Over Two Hundred Musicians in Thirty-Six Editions

Since 1989, over two hundred leading musicians, cellists and others, who perform with Europe's most prestigious orchestras, have participated in the Rencontres. In 2006, the association created a chamber orchestra capable of performing beyond Bélaye. The festival has evolved while retaining its identity: the celebration of the cello as the king of instruments, in a village entirely dedicated to it.

A Legacy for the Future

After thirty-six editions, with the 36th edition having taken place from August 2 to 8, 2025, Roland Pidoux is no longer the artistic director. However, the association Les Rencontres de Bélaye continues, driven by a team determined to pursue reflection and innovation to extend the actions undertaken during these thirty-seven years of commitment to music and the region.
