Classical music festival in a medieval castle
The Rencontres Musicales du Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil take place annually in mid-August within the walls of the Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil, a 12th-century medieval fortress nicknamed the "little Carcassonne of Berry". This classical music festival combines artistic excellence with an exceptional heritage setting, offering the public four days of concerts in the castle's halls and gardens.
The heart of the festival lies in a resident orchestra bringing together over thirty musicians from all over France. Under the artistic direction of David Molard Soriano, these instrumentalists form a high-quality symphonic ensemble that forms the backbone of the programming.
Each edition invites renowned soloists from the world of classical music and opera. Among the artists who have participated in the festival: the baritone Florian Sempey, the violinist Manon Galy, the tenor Volodymyr Kapshuk, and the baritone Paul Gaugler. These artists perform alongside the orchestra in programs dedicated to romantic opera, chamber music, and the great works of the symphonic repertoire.
The festival offers a diverse program: symphonic concerts, chamber music, opera recitals, literary moments, and musical discoveries, reaching a wide audience, from seasoned music lovers to families wishing to discover classical music.
Since 2025, the festival has launched a Chamber Music Academy directed by Camille Fonteneau, the festival's solo violin. This academy offers young musicians the opportunity to perfect their skills with professionals and participate in the Rencontres Musicales, strengthening the festival's educational and transmission dimension.
The setting of the Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil gives the festival a unique dimension. Concerts take place in the historic halls of the castle and in the French formal gardens, creating an alchemy between architectural, landscape, and musical heritage. This immersion in history enriches the artistic experience and makes the Rencontres Musicales an exceptional event.
The fifth edition of the Rencontres Musicales du Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil will take place from August 13 to 16, 2026. The festival will continue its mission of promoting classical music in the exceptional setting of the medieval castle.
The resident orchestra will again consist of over thirty musicians, and the Chamber Music Academy directed by Camille Fonteneau will allow young talents to hone their skills. Renowned soloists will be invited for symphonic concerts, chamber music, and opera recitals. The castle and its gardens will provide the ideal setting for four days of musical discovery and celebration of the classical repertoire.
The festival takes place at the Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil, 9 rue du Château, Ainay-le-Vieil (18200), in the Cher department, Centre-Val de Loire region.
The festival takes place annually in mid-August, over four days (usually Thursday to Sunday).
