International music festival in Quimper since 1979
The Semaines Musicales de Quimper is an international music festival founded in 1979, recognized for its transversality and its openness beyond all aesthetic boundaries and periods of musical history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Each summer, the festival offers a four-day thematic highlight in August, complemented by four major events spread throughout the year, thus ensuring permanent artistic continuity in Cornouaille. Supported by OSCAC (Office Sud Cornouaille d'Animation Culturelle), the Semaines Musicales bring vocal and instrumental music to life in emblematic heritage sites of Quimper, blending classical music, jazz, world music, and popular traditions.
Founded in 1979, the Semaines Musicales de Quimper have become one of the most emblematic music festivals in Brittany. For over four decades, this international festival has resonated music in the heritage sites of Quimper and its region, with a program that embraces all repertoires: classical music, baroque, jazz, fado, traditional and popular music.
The uniqueness of the Semaines Musicales lies in its thematic approach. Each summer edition is built around a unifying theme that invites the public to explore a musical culture, an era, or a specific genre. In 2025, the 46th edition offers an immersion into the vibrant universe of Cuba, blending son cubano, Latin jazz, and traditional Cuban music. In 2026, it will be Italian music that will be celebrated in all its forms, from baroque to opera, including popular song.
The concerts of the Semaines Musicales take place in remarkable heritage sites: the Saint-Corentin Cathedral, the churches and chapels of Cornouaille, as well as the Scène Éphémère (Ephemeral Stage) set up in the gardens of the Bishop's Palace. These exceptional settings give the concerts an intimate and majestic dimension, conducive to listening and musical emotion.
Beyond the summer highlight, the Semaines Musicales offers four major events spread throughout the year: chamber music concerts, recitals, musical lectures, and festive events. This continuous programming allows the festival to build audience loyalty and maintain a permanent artistic presence in the Cornouaille region.
The festival is supported by OSCAC (Office Sud Cornouaille d'Animation Culturelle), an association partnered with the City of Quimper. Since 1979, OSCAC has been working to promote live music in Cornouaille, combining artistic excellence and conviviality. The Semaines Musicales benefit from the support of the City of Quimper, the Department of Finistère, and the Brittany Region.
