Four evenings of free aperitif-concerts on the Château square in the medieval fortified town
Every end of July, Montpezat-de-Quercy offers its inhabitants and summer visitors a simple and precious gift: four evenings of free open-air concerts in the heart of the fortified town. The Soirées Festives were born from the desire to create a moment of musical sharing in a friendly format, accessible to all, in the exceptional setting of this village classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
The principle is simple and effective: each evening, from July 23 to 26, the place du Château — the central public square of the fortified town, with its stone arcades and medieval facades — transforms into a summer music stage. Residents come down to the street with their chairs or settle at the terraces of cafes and restaurants, passing tourists stop to listen, children run between the adults' legs: the atmosphere is that of the great summer gatherings of Quercy, relaxed and warm.
The aperitif-concert formula is at the heart of the Soirées Festives' identity. Before each concert, a friendly aperitif brings the audience together for a drink, creating the conditions for meeting and sharing before the music takes over. This hybrid format, between a gastronomic moment and a musical moment, is particularly suited to the spirit of Quercy: here, conviviality and the pleasure of the table are part of the culture just as much as music.
The wines of Quercy and the region, local products served as aperitifs, lively discussions between neighbors and summer visitors who meet: the aperitif-concert is the quintessential summer ritual, the one that transforms a concert into a village festival.
The Soirées Festives host various musical groups, adapting to their family and intergenerational audience. Jazz, popular music, world music, folk, songs, Occitan music: the program for the four evenings covers a wide spectrum so that everyone can find their happiness during the festive weekend.
Particular attention is paid to local and regional artists: the Soirées Festives play a role in supporting the musical scene of Quercy and Tarn-et-Garonne, offering local or regional groups a space for visibility in a rewarding setting and in front of a large audience.
The place du Château of Montpezat-de-Quercy is one of the most remarkable public spaces in the village. Surrounded by medieval facades, arcaded houses, and the silhouette of the 14th-century Saint-Martin collegiate church, it forms a natural theater of rare beauty for open-air concerts. When night falls, and the village lights illuminate the golden stones of the facades, the atmosphere is particularly magical.
The Saint-Martin collegiate church, which overlooks the square, houses one of the most remarkable collections of 16th-century Flemish tapestries in the Southwest: five magnificent tapestries depicting the life of Monseigneur de Montpezat, Bishop of Montauban in the 16th century. These artistic treasures, which can be visited during the day, add a cultural and historical dimension to the square that enriches the evening experience.
Montpezat-de-Quercy was founded in 1256 as a royal bastide, according to the characteristic grid plan of medieval new towns in the Southwest. Classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, it retains its original layout with its perpendicular streets, covered arcades, market hall, and houses made of pebbles from the Aveyron.
Located in the Quercy Blanc, this land of white causses and deep valleys straddling Tarn-et-Garonne and Lot, Montpezat is a village that attracts many tourists each summer for its architectural and natural heritage. The Soirées Festives contribute to the summer animation and cultural vitality of the village, offering a free and friendly program that complements the heritage and gastronomic offerings.
The total freeness of the Soirées Festives is a fundamental dimension of their identity. Supported by the municipality and the local association, these evenings are designed as a cultural service to the village community and its summer guests. No ticketing, no enclosed area, no barriers: just the square, the July sky, the music, and the people.
This total accessibility is what makes the Soirées Festives bring together such diverse audiences: families with children, village seniors, young passing tourists, hikers on the Saint-Jacques pilgrimage route who stop in Montpezat, second-home owners enjoying the Quercy summer. The festival belongs to everyone.
