The longest medieval festival in France: nine days of celebration in the heart of Bourbonnais
Since 1994, the Souvigny Medieval Fair transforms this historic village in the Allier region into a 13th-century town for nine days every summer. The European Festival of Troubadours and Jesters, the longest medieval festival in France, attracts around 40,000 visitors with its street performances, musicians, jugglers, fire-eaters, tightrope walkers, craftspeople at work, medieval taverns, banquets, and period encampments. Free entry, from 2 PM to midnight, in an immersive and popular atmosphere.
Each year, in the last days of July and the first days of August, the village of Souvigny rediscovers its former glory for nine days of medieval celebration. Founded in 1994, the Souvigny Medieval Fair has become, over the decades, the longest medieval festival in France, attracting around 40,000 visitors each year to the streets of this historically rich village, once the "eldest daughter of Cluny" and the necropolis of the Dukes of Bourbon.
Under the name European Festival of Troubadours and Jesters, the event unfolds a rich program from 2 PM to midnight. The streets come alive with troubadours, jugglers, fire-eaters, tightrope walkers, street theater actors, musicians, and jesters from all over Europe. Open-air stages host continuous performances: medieval music, theater, acrobatics, and fire shows on the priory esplanade, with entertainment for all ages.
The village transforms into a true medieval town with its craftspeople's workshops: blacksmiths, potters, woodturners, tanners, and cooks preparing ancient recipes. The taverns offer "cauldron menus" with medieval flavors, while the banquets held in the old Saint-Marc church offer a festive meal accompanied by shows, at a price of 36 euros per person (medieval costume and reservation mandatory).
To enhance immersion, the fair uses its own currency, the "Sou-Vigny", usable in the stalls and taverns on site. As part of an eco-responsible approach, a system of reusable glasses is in place. The rental of medieval costumes is available starting from 5 Sou-Vigny for the day, allowing visitors to blend into the period atmosphere.
Souvigny, classified among the Grands Sites de France, houses remarkable heritage with its Cluniac priory founded in the 10th century, the necropolis of the Dukes of Bourbon. The medieval fair is set within this exceptional historical context, celebrating the medieval heritage of a village that was one of the most important spiritual and political centers of Bourbonnais. The organization is managed by the association Souvigny Grand Site, supported by about fifty volunteers who prepare the decor and infrastructure during the week preceding the opening.
