Theatre and circus take over the mountain trails
Since 1998, the Spectacles de Grands Chemins have offered a unique artistic experience in France: street shows, theatre, circus, dance, and music performances that unfold not only in the streets and squares of Ax-les-Thermes, but also on the mountain trails, high plateaus, and in the villages of the Ax valleys, in the heart of Haute-Ariege. The concept of show-hike is the festival's signature: spectators-hikers set off on foot into the mountains and discover companies performing in the midst of nature, by a stream, in a clearing, or on a high plateau.
Five days of shows and encounters
For five days, the festival offers a rich and eclectic program: street theatre, contemporary circus, dance, music, open-air cinema, shows for children, and multidisciplinary performances. The shows are performed outdoors, in unusual and often remarkable locations: the park of the Ax-les-Thermes casino, the streets of the thermal spa, the Beille plateau, and the villages of Orgeix, Merens-les-Vals, Savignac, and Sorgeat. The festival is both artistic and sporting, blending contemporary creation with the discovery of the natural and built heritage of Haute-Ariege.
A festival rooted in its territory
The Spectacles de Grands Chemins are driven by the association Ax Animation, which works year-round to promote cultural and festive activities in Haute-Ariege. The festival is part of an initiative to promote the region, inviting spectators to discover the landscapes, villages, and heritage of the Ax valley while enjoying quality performances. The invited companies are selected for their ability to interact with the location and landscape, creating ephemeral and unique moments of performance.
Accessibility and conviviality
The festival is distinguished by its accessibility: the majority of shows are free, the show-hikes are offered at a very modest price, and indoor performances are at a reduced rate. The atmosphere is friendly and family-oriented, with catering areas, camping facilities, and moments of sharing between artists and spectators. The Spectacles de Grands Chemins are a must-attend event of the summer in Ariège, recognized by national street arts networks.
