The most mythical trail in Catalan Country
Since 1905, the Canigó Championship has been a sports institution in the Pyrénées-Orientales. This mythical race that leads to the summit of the Pic du Canigou (2,785 m) from Vernet-les-Bains is one of the oldest mountain running events in France. Renamed Trail du Canigou, the event has modernized by offering a full weekend of races for all levels.
Formats for all levels
The weekend program offers a variety of races adapted to each runner's profile:
- Maratrail du Canigou: 44.3 km with 2,600 m of positive elevation gain, ascent to the summit of Canigou
- Trail du Barbet: 33 km, 2,100 m D+
- Trail des Mattes Rouges: 20 km, 1,250 m D+
- Tour de Goa: 10.5 km, 600 m D+
- Double KV du Canigou: 10.5 km, 2,035 m D+
- Nocturne de la Pena: 8.8 km, 500 m D+ (night race)
- KV de Bonne Aigue: 5.4 km, 1,000 m D+
A magnificent mountain setting
The routes cross sumptuous landscapes: beech and fir forests, mountain pastures, mountain lakes, dizzying ridges, and of course the iconic summit of Canigou with its 360° view of the Mediterranean and the Pyrenean range. The diversity of the routes allows you to discover the natural richness of the Canigó massif, classified as a Grand Site de France.
A friendly and popular event
The start village in Vernet-les-Bains buzzes with the rhythm of the races all weekend. Bib collection at the Casino, runner's village, warm aid stations at the checkpoints, award ceremony, and a festive Catalan atmosphere make the Canigó Championship much more than just a race: a true gathering of the Catalan Pyrenees trail community.
