The ultra trail in the heart of Europe's largest volcano
The Ultra Trail du Puy Mary Aurillac (UTPMA) is a major trail running event that takes place every June in the heart of the Monts du Cantal, on the slopes of the largest stratovolcano in Europe. Organized by the TOM15 association since 2012, the event offers several race formats ranging from 10 to 114 km, crossing spectacular volcanic landscapes between Aurillac and Puy Mary. More than 2,000 runners participate in this sporting and human adventure, which has become a must-see on the national trail running calendar.
Created in 2012 by the association TOM15, a group of friends passionate about trail running and outdoor sports, the Ultra Trail du Puy Mary Aurillac (UTPMA) has become one of the most popular trail races in France in just a few years. The event takes place on the slopes of the largest stratovolcano in Europe, offering breathtaking landscapes to runners between glacial valleys, green pastures, volcanic cirques, and summits over 1,800 meters high.
The UTPMA offers a complete range of events adapted to all types of runners:
The UTPMA is an UTMB Index referenced race, making it an important stage for trail runners aiming for major international events. The 114 km race offers total immersion in the Monts du Cantal, with an elevation gain of 5,500 meters that tests the endurance and determination of the runners. With over 500 participants in the ultra, 600 in the grand trail, and 500 in the Jordanne trail, the event is regularly fully booked.
The Jardin des Carmes in Aurillac serves as the start and finish village for all events. This is where bib collection, entertainment, and festivities take place. On Friday evening, a festive evening with dinner and concerts brings together runners, companions, and volunteers in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
The TOM15 association places eco-responsibility at the heart of the UTPMA organization. The event is committed to limiting its environmental impact on the sensitive natural areas of the Cantal, with waste management policies, limited marking, and raising participants' awareness of respecting the fauna and flora of the Cantal pastures.
The 13th edition of the UTPMA will be held on June 12 and 13, 2026, starting from Aurillac. The Ultra Trail du Puy Mary Aurillac will once again offer its various race formats in the heart of the Monts du Cantal, from the 114 km to the children's races.
