Second Empire Historical Reenactment at the Château de Valençay
For a weekend in September, the Château de Valençay dons its Second Empire attire for an exceptional historical reenactment. About forty historical reenactors in period costumes bring to life the fashion, gastronomy, dances, and games of Napoleon III's era within the castle and its gardens. The highlight of the event is the grand imperial ball on Saturday evening at the Orangery, organized in partnership with the association Le Ballet Impérial.
Every September, the Château de Valençay, listed among the fifteen great castles of the Loire, opens its doors for a unique historical reenactment dedicated to the Second Empire. The event "Valençay in the Time of Napoleon-Louis" immerses visitors in the refined and elegant atmosphere of Napoleon III's imperial court, within an exceptional heritage setting.
About forty reenactors specializing in the Second Empire period take over the château for the weekend. Dressed in sumptuous period attire—crinolines, frock coats, top hats—they animate the castle's salons, gardens, and Orangery. Throughout the day, they invite the public to discover the fashion for men and women of the era, the table arts and gastronomy, garden games of yesteryear, and Second Empire dances.
The most anticipated moment of the event is the grand imperial ball on Saturday evening. After a solemn procession through the castle's salons, participants in period costumes gather at the Orangery for an evening of historical dances with a dance card, organized in partnership with the association Le Ballet Impérial. This ball is open to the public by reservation, offering a unique immersive experience in the hushed atmosphere of the Second Empire.
Over the two days, the program alternates between dance demonstrations at the Orangery, fashion presentations for women and men in the King of Spain's Chamber, gastronomy workshops in the castle's dining room, and period games on the main lawn. A countryside picnic is offered in the park, allowing visitors to share a convivial moment in this magnificent setting.
The Château de Valençay, former residence of Prince Talleyrand, a major diplomat in French history, offers an ideal setting for this reenactment. Its richly furnished salons, its Orangery, and its vast French formal garden allow for complete immersion in the atmosphere of the 19th century. From 1808 to 1813, the château hosted the princes of Spain held by Napoleon I, adding to the historical significance of the place.
The next edition of Valençay in the Time of Napoleon-Louis is scheduled for September 12 and 13, 2026, at the Château de Valençay, featuring reenactors in costumes, activities, and a grand imperial ball.
