The age-old ceremony of the official opening of the grape harvest in the most famous appellation of Provence
Every first Friday of September for centuries, the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape has celebrated with pomp and solemnity the official opening of the grape harvest. The Ban des Vendanges is a ceremony inherited from medieval tradition, during which winemakers and the Confrérie des Echansons des Papes d'Avignon, in period costume, solemnly proclaim the authorization to begin the harvest. In 2025, the ceremony takes place on September 5th. Processions in costume, official speeches, tastings, and a popular feast make this day a unique event blending living heritage and wine tradition.
The Ban des Vendanges de Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the oldest and most spectacular wine ceremonies in Provence. Etched in the collective memory of the winemakers of the Vaucluse, this event solemnly marks the official opening of the grape harvest in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC appellation — the first appellation of controlled origin created in France, in 1936.
The tradition of the ban des vendanges dates back to the Middle Ages, a time when lords and ecclesiastical authorities set by public decree — the "ban" — the date from which peasants were authorized to harvest their grapes. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this right held particular importance: the village was the summer residence of the Avignon popes in the 14th century, and the wines from the pontifical estate enjoyed exceptional prestige throughout Christendom.
Today, it is the Confrérie des Echansons des Papes d'Avignon that presides over the ceremony. Dressed in their medieval costumes — long velvet robes, wide-brimmed hats, insignia, and brotherhood medals — the "échansons" parade through the village streets in a solemn and colorful procession. This gastronomic and wine brotherhood perpetuates the traditions of the sommeliers and cupbearers who served the sovereign pontiffs who resided in Avignon from 1309 to 1377.
The ceremony takes place in the village square, in front of the ruins of the popes' castle. A dignitary — a local elected official, a personality from the wine world, or a representative of the Republic — officially proclaims the opening of the grape harvest in a solemn formula, echoing the text of ancient lordly bans. The church bells ring out, and the winemakers present respond with cheers.
In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the timing of the grape harvest is particularly crucial. The appellation, covering approximately 3,200 hectares across the communes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Orange, Courthézon, Bédarrides, and Sorgues, produces some of the most sought-after age-worthy wines in the world. The terroir is exceptional: the famous rolled pebbles — these round stones heated by the sun and radiating their warmth at night — the mistral wind that dries the grapes, and a multitude of grape varieties allowing for a rare complexity of wines.
The decision of the harvest date is therefore a foundational act. It determines the quality of the vintage: too early, the grapes lack maturity and concentration; too late, they risk overripening. The official ban, even though it lost its mandatory legal force long ago, remains a strong symbolic benchmark for the appellation's winemakers.
Beyond the official ceremony, the Ban des Vendanges is a true popular festival. The village streets come alive from the morning with producers' markets, exhibitions of old wine-making equipment, and demonstrations of traditional know-how. The appellation's estates open their doors for tastings, allowing visitors to sample the latest vintages before the harvest begins.
At the end of the day, a Provençal feast brings together winemakers, elected officials, personalities, and visitors around tables set up outdoors. Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, dishes cooked in the colors of Provence, and local music create an atmosphere of conviviality and sharing that embodies the deep values of this wine territory. Folk groups and Provençal musicians entertain the evening.
The Ban des Vendanges is also an opportunity to discover or rediscover Châteauneuf-du-Pape in all its autumnal splendor. At this time of year, the vines begin to take on their golden and coppery hues, offering landscapes of striking beauty. The ruined medieval castle, overlooking the Rhône and the plains of the Vaucluse, offers an exceptional 360° panorama. The wine and cooperage museum, housed in an old cellar, retraces the history of the appellation since the Middle Ages.
The village hosts numerous estates open for visits and tastings throughout the year. The Ban des Vendanges is the ideal opportunity to meet their owners during their most intense and significant working period of the wine year.
