Chambord, world cradle of sound and light
It was in Chambord, during the summer of 1952, that the very first sound and light show in the world was born, a visionary idea by architect Paul Robert-Houdin, grandson of the famous illusionist. Titled « Les Très Riches Heures de Chambord », this creation brought together historian André Castelot and composer Georges van Parys. On July 5, 1952, President Vincent Auriol attended one of the first performances. The "sound and light" genre, born there, then spread worldwide.
Nocturnal shows on the Renaissance facade
Over the decades, the Domaine national de Chambord kept this tradition alive with shows projected onto the 156 meters of the north facade of the castle. The most recent productions, signed by the SKERTZÒ studio, followed one another from 1999 to 2003, from 2005 to 2007, then with « Chambord, rêve de lumières » from 2008 to 2011, the last documented regular season. These shows blended animated images, original music, and light effects, bringing to life the vision of François Ier, royal festivities, and the mysteries of the double-helix staircase attributed to Léonard de Vinci.
The end of a regular tradition
After 2011, the sound and light show was no longer renewed every summer. Only two exceptional evenings, « Les Nuits de Chambord », marked on May 20 and 21, 2022 the seventieth anniversary of the 1952 invention. Since then, no new sound and light season has been programmed.
Chambord today
The Château de Chambord, the largest of the Loire castles and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981, remains a major tourist destination and now offers other events (concerts, classical music festival, equestrian show, exhibitions, year-end illuminations). Its facade has also been subject to a permanent lighting display every evening since 2019. These current events are distinct from the historical sound and light show mentioned on this page.
