Free and festive rock at the foot of the Rock of Cotignac
Founded by guitarist Ozzy Hoppe, Cotignac Village du Rock is a free rock festival held every summer at the foot of the Rock of Cotignac, a spectacular natural site carved with troglodyte dwellings. In 2025, for its 10th edition, it brought together rock, blues, and soul bands on August 2nd in front of a large crowd enjoying this popular open-air musical celebration, in the heart of one of Provence's most beautiful villages.
Cotignac is one of the most remarkable villages in the Var: its houses lean against a 80-meter high tuff rock, pierced with troglodyte caves inhabited in the Middle Ages. It is at the foot of this exceptional rock, in the village square and shaded alleys, that the festival Cotignac Village du Rock has taken up residence.
The event was born from the passion of Ozzy Hoppe, a guitarist and musician rooted in the local rock and blues scene, who wanted to create a popular, free, and festive musical gathering for the inhabitants of Cotignac and passing visitors. Since its inception, the festival has established itself as a highlight of the Varois summer, remaining true to its values of accessibility and conviviality.
The festival's setting is one of its major assets. The Rock of Cotignac, a cliff of volcanic tuff 80 meters high, forms a grandiose natural amphitheater that frames the stage and offers remarkable natural acoustics. In the evening, as the golden summer light caresses the rocky walls and the first guitar notes rise, the atmosphere becomes truly magical.
Cotignac is also known for its many fountains, its century-old lime trees, and its lively central square. The festival is part of this tradition of public life and sharing, extending the long Provençal summer evenings with a joyous and popular musical celebration.
The programming of Cotignac Village du Rock favors authentic rock, blues, and its derivatives: classic rock, American blues, Celtic rock, soul, rhythm and blues. Local and regional bands share the stage with artists from all over France and sometimes from abroad.
In 2025, the 10th edition featured Five & The Red One and Johnny Gallagher, an Irish guitarist and singer recognized on the international blues scene, for a concert on August 2, 2025, in front of the Rock. The evening lived up to all expectations, bringing together an audience of all ages in the incomparable atmosphere of the Provençal village.
What distinguishes Cotignac Village du Rock from major summer festivals is its resolutely human and accessible spirit. Admission is completely free, allowing everyone—families, passing tourists, regulars, and the curious—to enjoy the concerts without financial constraints. The festival thrives thanks to the involvement of local volunteers, village shopkeepers, and the municipality of Cotignac, who see it as a tool for summer entertainment and tourism promotion.
Concerts start in the late afternoon and continue into the evening, allowing attendees to enjoy both the declining sunlight on the rock and the nocturnal atmosphere of the illuminated village. Food and drinks are provided by local associations and businesses, with regional products highlighted.
Cotignac is part of Provence Verte, a territory recognized for the quality of its landscapes, its heritage, and its wine production. The village is classified among the most beautiful in the region and attracts thousands of tourists each summer who come to discover its rock, its miraculous springs (Notre-Dame de Grâces), and its postcard-perfect square.
The Village du Rock festival is part of this diverse summer cultural offering and helps make Cotignac a must-visit destination for lovers of Provence and authentic rock.
Cotignac Village du Rock returns in the summer of 2026 for another free rock and blues evening at the foot of the Rock of Cotignac. True to its popular and festive spirit, the festival will once again bring together rock artists and the Provençal public in one of the most beautiful natural settings in the Var.
