Every spring, the Bishopric garden in Lavaur, nestled in the heart of the Tarn's medieval city, transforms into a vibrant stage for Occitan culture. En esperar l'estiu – "In anticipation of summer" – is the festive and free event organized by the association VAURE'OC, a faithful guardian of the Occitan language in the Vauraise basin. Labeled Total Festum, a program by the Occitanie Region to support popular cultures, the festival is part of a network of over 300 events dedicated to the Occitan language and traditions.
The festival offers an intimate and warm program centered around three pillars: Occitan music, traditional dance, and choral singing. The invited groups and artists draw from the rich repertoire of Occitan songs – including "danses à pousser," polkas, mazurkas, and round dances – and invite the public to join in, take to the dance floor, and share the vibrant joy of folk dances. The choir is a strong collective moment where young and old sing together in Occitan, a language with a melodious charm forged by centuries of troubadours.
The festival's afternoons and evenings take place outdoors in the Bishopric garden, a remarkable tree-lined park overlooking the Gresigne, offering an exceptional setting for these popular gatherings. Access is completely free, in the spirit of openness and sharing characteristic of the Total Festum movement.
