En esperar l'estiu: The Occitan Spring Festival in Lavaur

Every spring, the Bishopric garden in Lavaur, nestled in the heart of the Tarn's medieval city, transforms into a vibrant stage for Occitan culture. En esperar l'estiu – "In anticipation of summer" – is the festive and free event organized by the association VAURE'OC, a faithful guardian of the Occitan language in the Vauraise basin. Labeled Total Festum, a program by the Occitanie Region to support popular cultures, the festival is part of a network of over 300 events dedicated to the Occitan language and traditions.

Occitan Culture Celebrated

The festival offers an intimate and warm program centered around three pillars: Occitan music, traditional dance, and choral singing. The invited groups and artists draw from the rich repertoire of Occitan songs – including "danses à pousser," polkas, mazurkas, and round dances – and invite the public to join in, take to the dance floor, and share the vibrant joy of folk dances. The choir is a strong collective moment where young and old sing together in Occitan, a language with a melodious charm forged by centuries of troubadours.

The festival's afternoons and evenings take place outdoors in the Bishopric garden, a remarkable tree-lined park overlooking the Gresigne, offering an exceptional setting for these popular gatherings. Access is completely free, in the spirit of openness and sharing characteristic of the Total Festum movement.

VAURE'OC: An Association Serving Occitan

VAURE'OC is an association from Tarn whose mission is to promote the Occitan language and culture in the Vauraise river basin, at the gateway to Lauragais. Through organizing shows, dance and singing workshops, language courses, and educational outings, the association helps keep Occitan alive daily. The En esperar l'estiu festival is VAURE'OC's major annual event, a time when Occitan culture moves from the rehearsal room to public spaces to reach a wider audience.

Lavaur: Medieval Heart of Tarn

Lavaur is a historic town in Tarn, a former Cathar stronghold, famous for its Saint-Alain Cathedral and its terraced gardens overlooking the Agout River. The town played a major role in Occitan medieval history and today hosts a dynamic community of defenders of Occitan culture. The Bishopric garden, a former episcopal vegetable and pleasure garden, has become a cultural space appreciated by locals for its lawns, ancient trees, and panoramic views.

Total Festum: The Occitan Language Celebrated Throughout the Region

The Total Festum label, supported by the Occitanie Region, supports over 300 free and participatory cultural events each summer that promote Occitan and Catalan languages and cultures. En esperar l'estiu is part of this network that spans the entire territory, from the Pyrenees to the Cévennes, from the banks of the Rhône to those of the Garonne. It promises a living, rooted popular culture, open to all.
