Jazz for families at the Familistère de Guise
FamilijazZ is a jazz and world music festival created in 2003 in Guise, Aisne, by the association Jazz'thémis. Every autumn, the festival offers an eclectic program mixing jazz, swing, world music, and musical awakening, in remarkable heritage sites: the Italian-style theatre of the Familistère Godin, the fortified castle of the Dukes of Guise, as well as cafés and restaurants in the town. Open to all audiences, including families and young audiences, FamilijazZ cultivates a spirit of conviviality and sharing around jazz in all its forms.
Born in 2003 from the initiative of a group of passionate volunteers gathered within the Jazz'thémis association, the FamilijazZ festival has become a must-attend autumn event in the Aisne region. True to its objectives since its creation, the festival highlights jazz in all its diversity, welcoming musicians from the international, national, and regional jazz scene, while maintaining a spirit of conviviality and encounters that brings spectators and artists back edition after edition.
One of FamilijazZ's strengths lies in its choice of performance venues, intimately linked to the historical heritage of Guise. The Italian-style theatre of the Familistère Godin, a listed historic monument, offers a remarkable acoustic setting for the main concerts. This theatre, a jewel of Jean-Baptiste André Godin's social utopia, provides a unique setting in France for listening to jazz. The fortified castle of the Dukes of Guise, an imposing medieval fortress, also hosts concerts in a spectacular setting. Finally, free concerts are offered in the town, cafés, and restaurants, making the whole of Guise vibrate to the rhythm of jazz.
FamilijazZ offers a rich program mixing jazz, swing, gypsy jazz, world music, and contemporary creations. The festival hosts both renowned artists and emerging groups. Among the artists who have marked past editions are Art Mengo, Omar Sosa Trio, Nico Morelli, André Ceccarelli, Michel Benita, Géraldine Laurent, Lionel Suarez, Jérémie Ternoy, Jacques Mahieux, and Maciré Sylla. Masterclasses complement the program, offering the public privileged moments of exchange with the musicians.
As its name suggests, FamilijazZ places families and young audiences at the heart of its project. The festival offers concerts accessible to all ages, with adapted prices for children and families. Musical activities in schools, jazz awakening for the youngest, and a warm atmosphere make this festival a unifying event where every generation finds its place. The convivial spirit and affordable prices contribute to making FamilijazZ a unique moment of musical sharing in Thiérache.
Driven by the Jazz'thémis association, FamilijazZ relies on the commitment of jazz-loving volunteers who work year-round to prepare each edition. The festival benefits from the support of the Guise Town Hall, the Aisne Departmental Council, and the Hauts-de-France region, as well as local partners who contribute to the cultural influence of Thiérache.
The 2025 edition of FamilijazZ takes place from September 26 to October 31 in Guise and in the towns of Thiérache. Five concerts are scheduled, including Les Fils Canouche, Duo EL' Son ARH, The Bottles, Matthieu Boré Trio African Variations, Quartet des Années Folles, and Costil Swingers.
