The biennial festival of African culture in the heart of Champagne
Africa'Fismes is a free biennial festival dedicated to African culture, organized by the association Lez'Arts d'Aisne since 2009 in the small town of Fismes, 20 minutes from Reims. For three days in September, the festival offers concerts, exhibitions, dance and music workshops, conferences, an artisanal market, and African gastronomy. The event highlights the cultural richness of West Africa through performing arts, traditions, and intercultural exchanges.
Since 2009, the Africa'Fismes festival has transported audiences to the heart of African culture in the small town of Fismes, on the doorstep of Champagne. Supported by the association Lez'Arts d'Aisne with the collaboration of the MJC of Fismes and the town hall, this biennial and free festival offers a rich and varied program celebrating African cultural diversity through arts, music, dance, traditions, and gastronomy.
Each edition features renowned artists from the African music scene and the diaspora. The 2025 edition notably hosted Habib Koité, a major figure in Malian music, and Moh Kouyaté, an internationally acclaimed Guinean guitarist. The opening concert on Friday evening, the only paid event of the festival, kicks off the festivities at the La Spirale hall in Fismes.
On Saturday, the promenades of Fismes (allée Goscinny-Uderzo) become the stage for a full day of activities: African dance and music workshops, art and craft exhibitions, conferences on African culture and history, and performances by theater and dance companies. The public is invited to actively participate in the workshops in a warm and festive atmosphere.
Africa'Fismes also showcases African gastronomy with four food stalls offering various specialties: Senegalese yassa, Ivorian mafé, grilled fish, and other traditional dishes. These stalls allow visitors to discover the culinary richness of the African continent in a friendly atmosphere.
In the lead-up to the festival, a week of educational activities is organized in schools to raise students' awareness of African culture. This educational component extends the mission of the Lez'Arts d'Aisne association: to promote intercultural exchanges and introduce the artistic richness of the African continent to as many people as possible.
The festival takes place in the promenades of Fismes (allée Goscinny-Uderzo) and at the La Spirale hall.
