Musical journey in a mountain territory between the Alps and Provence
The Festival de Chaillol is a musical journey in a mountain territory, supported by the Espace Culturel de Chaillol since 1997. Every summer, from mid-July to mid-August, concerts take place in churches, chapels, village squares, and forests of Champsaur-Valgaudemar, Buëch-Dévoluy, and Serre-Ponçon in the Hautes-Alpes. The program mixes classical music, jazz, world music, contemporary creation, and popular traditions. A national stage of interest "Art in territory" since 2019, the festival combines artistic excellence and rural anchoring.
Founded in 1997 by pianist Michaël Dian, the Festival de Chaillol is a unique musical adventure that unfolds every summer in the valleys of the Hautes-Alpes, between the Alps and Provence. For nearly a month, from mid-July to mid-August, national and international musicians travel the region to offer a daily concert in a different commune: Saint-Michel-de-Chaillol, Gap, Tallard, Ancelle, Saint-Bonnet-en-Champsaur, and many other villages in Champsaur-Valgaudemar, Buëch-Dévoluy, and Serre-Ponçon – Val d'Avance.
The originality of the Festival de Chaillol lies in its choice of concert venues: Romanesque churches, hamlet chapels, village squares, communal halls, castles, and even forest clearings. These everyday spaces, filled with music, regain a poetic and sacred dimension. The journey is not just a geographical displacement: it is at the heart of the artistic project, creating an intimate relationship between the musicians, the inhabitants, and the Alpine landscape.
The festival's program embraces the diversity of today's music: classical music and chamber music, jazz, contemporary creation, world music, traditional music, and improvised music. Each edition hosts ensembles, soloists, and groups who share the same artistic standards and a taste for engaging with audiences. Week-long artist residencies allow musicians to soak up the rhythm of the places and build connections with the inhabitants, beyond the concert itself.
The Festival de Chaillol is supported by the association Espace Culturel de Chaillol, which develops an artistic and cultural project in the Hautes-Alpes throughout the year. Labeled a national stage of interest "Art in territory" since 2019 by the Ministry of Culture, the association programs over 50 concerts per year in about forty communes, accompanied by outreach, school awareness, and transmission activities. The summer festival is the highlight, bringing together music lovers, families, and residents around vibrant and accessible music.
Convinced that "just because you are in a rural area doesn't mean the artistic offering shouldn't be of high quality," Michaël Dian has built a festival that reconciles musical excellence and human proximity. The conscious pricing—from 5 to 20 euros according to each person's means, free for children under 12—reflects this philosophy of sharing. With its five permanent employees and about fifty volunteers, the Festival de Chaillol has demonstrated for nearly thirty years that an ambitious cultural project can radiate from a mountain village of 300 inhabitants.
30th edition of the Festival de Chaillol, from July 17 to August 9, 2026. Anniversary edition celebrating thirty years of musical journey in a mountain territory in the Hautes-Alpes. Program to be announced.
The Festival de Chaillol celebrates its 30th edition in 2026, from July 17 to August 9, 2026. This anniversary marks three decades of commitment to live music in a rural mountain territory. The detailed program will be announced in spring 2026 on the festival's website.
Ahead of the summer festival, the 2026 cultural season of Espace Culturel de Chaillol already offers musical events throughout the year: "Mood Indigo" in February, "Raga résonance" in March, "Reflets d'enfance" in April, "Hémisphères" in May, and "Aàgut" in June, in the communes of Champsaur-Valgaudemar, Buëch-Dévoluy, and Serre-Ponçon.
The Festival de Chaillol is a traveling festival: concerts take place in numerous communes in the Hautes-Alpes, mainly in Champsaur-Valgaudemar, Buëch-Dévoluy, and Serre-Ponçon – Val d'Avance.
