International festival of dance, theater, and music in Marseille
The Festival de Marseille was founded in 1996 by Apolline Quintrand, with a first edition paying homage to the Mediterranean, held at the Vieille Charité. Since then, the festival has continued to grow to become one of the major events for contemporary creation in the South of France. In 2025, it celebrated its 30th edition with 36 artistic proposals spread across fifteen venues in Marseille.
Dance, theater, performance, and music form the core of the Festival de Marseille's programming. Each edition brings together artists from around the world — choreographers, directors, musicians, performers — around original creations, French and European premieres, and hybrid forms that blur the boundaries between disciplines. The festival places particular emphasis on artists from the Mediterranean region and its diasporas.
One of the unique aspects of the Festival de Marseille is its deep connection to the city itself. Performances take place in venues as diverse as the Théâtre National La Criée, the Friche la Belle de Mai, the Mucem, the Théâtre Silvain, public gardens, museums, and unexpected urban spaces. This itinerant approach transforms the city into a vast open-air stage and invites the people of Marseille to rediscover their territory through the lens of art.
Under the direction of Marie Didier since 2022, the Festival de Marseille affirms its commitment to accessibility and inclusion. Sign language interpretation, audio description services, FALC (Easy to Read and Understand) materials, and facilities for people with reduced mobility are an integral part of each edition. The festival also develops artistic education and cultural mediation activities throughout the year.

For its 31st edition, the Festival de Marseille will take place from June 14 to July 8, 2026 over three weeks and four weekends, in 14 emblematic venues of the Phocaean city: La Criée — Théâtre National de Marseille, la Friche la Belle de Mai, le Mucem, le Centre de la Vieille Charité, la Cité Radieuse Le Corbusier, KLAP Maison pour la Danse, le Ballet national de Marseille, the Théâtres de la Joliette, des Bernardines, des Calanques, de la Sucrière, and several gardens and public spaces.
The 2026 edition brings together 31 artistic proposals — 23 shows and performances, 4 films and 3 DJ sets for 50 representations, complemented by meetings and workshops — presented by artists from 22 cities across 17 countries: Afghanistan, South Africa, Algeria, Germany, Belgium, Egypt, Spain, France, Northern Ireland, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, Tunisia. The program includes 10 world premieres and 3 French premieres.
This 31st edition particularly highlights contemporary creation from the Mediterranean basin and its diasporas, with a mahraganat highlight dedicated to popular Egyptian electronic music (Toto, Islam Elarabi, projection-conference by Pauline Beugnies). Dance, performance, and movement permeate the program alongside theater, music, cinema, and visual arts.
Among the highlights, the 3rd creation by (LA)HORDE with the dancers of the Ballet national de Marseille, « Après moi, le déluge », will be presented from July 5 to 8 at La Criée. The piece questions our relationship to care, gaze, heritage, and transformation.
The festival renews its single price of €10 and launches new solidarity options: €5 for Aix-Marseille Université students and children under 12, and solidarity ticketing at €1 for people in precarious situations or with disabilities, via more than 100 partner organizations. Regarding accessibility: 21 subtitled shows for deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences, 5 audio-described shows for blind and visually impaired audiences, materials in FALC (Easy to Read and Understand).
