The oldest short film festival in France, open-air since 1978
Born in 1978 from the desire to freely and freely broadcast short films outdoors, the Festival du Film court en plein air de Grenoble is the oldest event dedicated to the short format in France. Organized every year at the end of June by the Cinémathèque de Grenoble, it celebrates international contemporary film creation in a unique setting: nocturnal outdoor screenings in the Jardin de Ville, at the foot of the Bastille, and indoor screenings at the Cinéma Juliet Berto, in the heart of Grenoble's historic center.
The general competition is the heart of the festival. It brings together international works of all genres — fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental cinema — by both renowned directors and emerging artists. The films are selected for their artistic quality, narrative originality, and ability to question the contemporary world. Each edition programs about ten screenings, divided between indoor screenings during the day and outdoor screenings at dusk.
An official jury composed of film professionals awards several prizes:
The festival also awards specific prizes for young audiences and teenagers, as well as a mention from the magazine Bref via the Agence du court métrage.
Beyond the competition, the festival offers a rich program:
With nearly 10,000 spectators each year, the festival is a must-attend event of the Grenoble summer. The free outdoor screenings at the Jardin de Ville, accessible to all, create a warm and festive atmosphere. For nearly fifty years, filmmakers, film professionals, and the general public have gathered in Grenoble to share their passion for short films under the stars.
The 49th edition of the Grenoble Open-Air Short Film Festival will take place from Thursday, June 25 to Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Cinéma Juliet Berto and outdoors at dusk in Place d'Agier and Place Saint-André, in the city center. As France's oldest short film festival since 1978, it will feature an international general competition (fiction, documentary, animation, experimental), a young audience competition for ages 2 and a half and up, and the traditional Short Film Night programmed by L'Agence du court métrage. Open-air screenings are free and open to all.
