The international festival of visual, sound, and digital arts in Caen
The festival ]interstice[ was born in 2006 under the artistic direction of Station Mir, a production and distribution structure dedicated to visual and digital arts based in Caen. Station Mir has been supporting, producing, and presenting the work of numerous international artists experimenting with the links between art and technology since 1995, creating works that blend sound, image, and digital elements and explore interactions with other disciplines such as science and research.
The ]interstice[ festival unfolds in various locations in Caen, offering a route of exhibitions and sound walks through the city. Among the venues involved: the Artothèque, the Écuries Lorge, the ésam Caen/Cherbourg (higher education school of arts and media), and various cultural spaces. The festival also hosts a program of performances, concerts, shows, and talks.
]interstice[ maintains partnerships with international artistic organizations, notably in Canada, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Belgium. These collaborations allow the festival to host artists from around the world and foster exchanges between the European and North American digital art scenes.
To celebrate the Millennium of Caen in 2025, the festival took on exceptional scope with ]interstice[1000, a program extending from spring 2024 to autumn 2025. This project, led by Station Mir, Oblique/s, Manœuvre, and the Laboratoire Modulaire de l'ésam Caen/Cherbourg, featured artistic residencies, exhibitions in thirteen different sites, and carte blanche invitations to international partners. The program concluded at the end of 2025 with an event marking the publication of a book on the 20 years of the festival and a documentary.
For its 20th edition, from May 6 to 10, 2026 in Caen, the ]interstice[ Festival launches the new format ]interstice[NOVA, which places emerging creation at the heart of the intersection between arts, sciences, and technologies. Five exhibitions, several evenings of concerts, performances and DJ sets, professional meetings, and the screening of a documentary punctuate this free-entry edition, mainly at the Écuries - Pôle culturel Lorge.
