The second oldest festival in France, cradle of theatre in Limousin
In the early 1950s, André Cluzeau, the mayor of Bellac, recognized the cultural potential of his commune centered around the work of its most famous son, the playwright Jean Giraudoux. In 1951, the inauguration of a commemorative monument brought together many figures from the performing arts world, including Valentine Tessier, Pierre Renoir, and Louis Jouvet, all performers of Giraudoux's works. The turnout was so significant that it led to the first edition of a theatre festival on July 4, 1954, held in the courtyard of the town hall, a natural scenic setting that would be used for twenty years.
Born from the meeting between André Cluzeau and director André Steiger, the festival was initially supported by the Comédie du Centre-Ouest, a workers' cooperative for theatrical production. Over the decades, the event has expanded considerably: initially dedicated exclusively to Giraudoux's repertoire, it opened up to all performing arts—contemporary theatre, music, dance, circus, puppetry, and street arts. In 2002, this evolution led to the creation of the Théâtre du Cloître, a designated stage that now manages the year-round programming and the organization of the summer festival.
Renamed the 'Festival des Émancipations' since 2023, the Festival National de Bellac affirms its commitment to inclusive and accessible culture. For four days in early July, around thirty artistic events take place: theatre performances, concerts, readings, exhibitions, circus performances, and forums/debates. The program, created by and for people, aims to respect everyone's dignity and be open to the world. Among the artists who have marked recent editions are Yannick Jaulin, Ballaké Sissoko, Piers Faccini, and Fanny Chériaux.
The Festival National de Bellac is more than just a summer event; it is a true driving force for cultural life in Haute-Vienne. Supported by the association Bellac sur Scène and the Théâtre du Cloître, and funded by the Municipality of Bellac and regional authorities, it enriches a rural territory and contributes to the renown of this small Limousin town far beyond its borders. Often described as the 'most international of rural festivals,' it attracts a loyal and curious audience each year, drawn by the artistic quality and conviviality of this unique event.
The Festival National de Bellac is preparing its 72nd edition for the summer of 2026. The program will be unveiled in the spring on the Théâtre du Cloître website.
