Vaucouleurs: In the Footsteps of Joan of Arc

Vaucouleurs holds a unique place in French history. It was from this town in the Meuse region that Joan of Arc departed on February 23, 1429, to join the Dauphin Charles in Chinon, a journey that would change the course of history. The Festival of the Departure of Joan of Arc commemorates this foundational event through a grand weekend of medieval festivities.

A Living Historical Heritage

The first Joan of Arc festivals took place in 1929, on the occasion of Joan of Arc's canonization. Revived in 1997, they have been held regularly since then, attracting an ever-increasing number of visitors to the streets of Vaucouleurs. The 2025 edition celebrated the 596th anniversary of the departure of the Maid of Orléans.

A Rich Program of Medieval Entertainment

The festive weekend offers a complete immersion into the medieval world:

  • Combat Reenactments: Historical reenactment troupes bring the battles of the era to life with period weapons and armor.
  • Medieval Market: Artisan stalls offering objects, costumes, jewelry, and products inspired by the Middle Ages.
  • Archery Tournaments: Demonstrations and introductions to medieval archery.
  • Equestrian Entertainment: Horsemen in period costumes and jousting demonstrations.
  • Minstrels and Troubadours: Musicians performing songs and tunes from the Middle Ages.
  • Craft Workshops: Coin minting, calligraphy, stained glass making, and other ancient trades.
  • Jugglers and Fire Eaters: Street performances for all ages.
