Medieval festival commemorating the departure of Joan of Arc from Vaucouleurs
The Festival of the Departure of Joan of Arc is a medieval festival held in Vaucouleurs, in the Meuse region, to commemorate Joan of Arc's departure for Chinon on February 23, 1429. This historical and festive event brings together medieval entertainment, combat reenactments, a medieval market, archery tournaments, minstrels and troubadours shows, demonstrations of ancient crafts, and equestrian entertainment. The first Joan of Arc festivals date back to 1929.
Vaucouleurs holds a unique place in French history. It was from this town in the Meuse region that Joan of Arc departed on February 23, 1429, to join the Dauphin Charles in Chinon, a journey that would change the course of history. The Festival of the Departure of Joan of Arc commemorates this foundational event through a grand weekend of medieval festivities.
The first Joan of Arc festivals took place in 1929, on the occasion of Joan of Arc's canonization. Revived in 1997, they have been held regularly since then, attracting an ever-increasing number of visitors to the streets of Vaucouleurs. The 2025 edition celebrated the 596th anniversary of the departure of the Maid of Orléans.
The festive weekend offers a complete immersion into the medieval world:
A visit to Vaucouleurs allows you to discover the Joan of Arc sites linked to her passage: the Porte de France, the castle chapel where Joan prayed, the remains of the Château de Baudricourt, and the municipal museum which retraces this chapter of history.
The Festival of the Departure of Joan of Arc mobilizes numerous volunteers and local associations who contribute to making this event a moment of sharing and pride for the entire community. The festival strengthens the link between heritage, history, and local life, and contributes to the tourist appeal of Vaucouleurs and the Meuse region.
