Festival Spring: Contemporary Circus in Bloom Across Normandy
Festival Spring is an artistic event of exceptional scale: for a month, from March to April, over 80 venues across Normandy host contemporary circus performances. From the grand hall of the Cirque-Théâtre d'Elbeuf, a unique historic monument in Europe, to traveling tents, as well as theaters, community halls, and public spaces, Spring makes circus blossom in all five Norman departments.
The festival is coordinated by the Platform 2 Pôles Cirque en Normandie, which brings together two structures labeled Pôle National Cirque: La Brèche in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin and the Cirque-Théâtre d'Elbeuf, affiliated with the Rouen Normandy Metropolis. This unique collaboration between two national poles enables unprecedented territorial coverage and an exceptionally rich program.
The Story of a Pioneering Festival
The festival's origins date back to 2010, when the Cirque-Théâtre d'Elbeuf and La Brèche began organizing circus highlights in the spring. The first edition jointly supported across the greater Normandy region under the name Spring was in 2017, attracting over 26,000 spectators. Since then, the festival has continued to grow, becoming the first international festival of new circus forms in Europe.
A Program Between Tradition and Innovation
Spring's program encompasses the full diversity of contemporary circus: acrobatics, juggling, trapeze, tightrope walking, Chinese pole, Cyr wheel, balancing, clowning, new magic, aerial arts, acrobatic dance, and multidisciplinary performances. The festival invites French and international companies, new creations and revivals, stage productions, and shows under a tent or in the open air.
Each edition is structured into themed routes organized by territory: Rouen Normandy Metropolis, Seine-Maritime Coast, Calvados, Eure, Manche, Orne, and Cotentin. This network allows the public in each department to benefit from an internationally high-quality program close to home.
Exceptional Territorial Anchoring
One of Spring's strengths is its anchoring in the Norman territories. The festival doesn't just focus on large urban venues; it also invests small rural towns, community halls, media libraries, and unusual spaces. This ambitious diffusion policy makes Spring an essential vector for cultural democratization and territorial development through culture.
