Festival of contemporary music in Pontacq
F'estives was a festival of contemporary and world music organized in Pontacq, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. For several days in May, this open-air festival offered an eclectic program mixing world music, afrobeat, French chanson, rock, and traditional music, on several stages spread throughout the village — Place des Tilleuls, La Caverne tent, main outdoor stage, and Saint-Laurent church. After several successful editions that hosted nationally and internationally renowned artists, the festival ceased its activities.
The F'estives festival marked the cultural landscape of Pontacq, a small town in the foothills of the Pyrenees located about twenty kilometers from Pau, for several years. Born from the desire to energize local cultural life, this festival of contemporary and world music offered an ambitious and eclectic program each May in a bucolic setting.
F'estives distinguished itself by its ability to take over the entire village of Pontacq. Several stages were set up in emblematic locations: the Place des Tilleuls hosted open-air concerts, the La Caverne tent offered an intimate atmosphere for musical discoveries, the main stage featured headliners, and the Saint-Laurent church hosted acoustic concerts in a heritage setting.
Over the years, F'estives managed to attract nationally and internationally renowned artists. The festival notably featured Dobet Gnahoré, a Grammy Award-winning Ivorian singer, Mango Gadzi, an emblematic band revisiting bal musette, Raoul Petite, a cult French festive rock group, and La Bande à Jojo. The programming ranged from world music, afrobeat, French chanson, alternative rock, and traditional music.
The spirit of F'estives was based on conviviality and sharing. The festival offered entertainment for all audiences, musical workshops, catering areas highlighting local products from Béarn and the Pyrenees, as well as opportunities for festival-goers to meet artists. The human scale of the festival and the rural setting of Pontacq contributed to creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
Although the festival has ceased its activities, F'estives has left a lasting mark on the cultural memory of the Pyrenean foothills. It demonstrated that a small village could host a quality musical event and contribute to the cultural influence of a rural territory. The spirit of F'estives continues to inspire cultural initiatives in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
