The Artists' Festival and local events in Gif-sur-Yvette, a town of art and science
Gif-sur-Yvette enlivens its public spaces each year with its emblematic local festivals, foremost among them the Artists' Festival. Every mid-June, the Château de Belleville and the town's artist workshops open their doors for two days of free artistic discovery. Painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography, and visual arts mingle in this commune on the Saclay plateau, in the heart of Île-de-France's scientific hub.
Gif-sur-Yvette is a commune in Essonne with approximately 21,000 inhabitants, nestled in the Yvette Valley in the heart of the Saclay Plateau, one of Europe's most important scientific and university hubs. A town within the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Natural Park, Gif-sur-Yvette cultivates a rich and diverse cultural life, driven by its artist residents, municipal facilities, and dynamic associations.
The commune's main festive and cultural event is the Artists' Festival, held annually in mid-June. Over two days, from 2 PM to 7 PM, artists from Gif-sur-Yvette open their workshops and exhibit their works throughout the town. The Château de Belleville — a 17th-century historic monument in the heart of the commune — hosts the main program with exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, printmaking, and visual arts.
The Artists' Festival is a rare moment when art leaves its usual spaces to be displayed everywhere in the town. Artist workshops, associative galleries, gardens, and public spaces become temporary exhibition venues, inviting the public to an artistic stroll through the neighborhoods of Gif-sur-Yvette.
The 2025 edition, which marked the 21st edition, featured 22 artists exhibiting in the park of the Château de Belleville, as well as collective workshops open to the public: Club Chevry 2 Bergeries (stone sculpture), MJC Cyrano (stencils and textile painting), collectif Pics de CentraleSupélec (photography). The disciplines represented included visual arts, ceramics, printmaking, ikebana, modeling, painting, and photography.
The Château de Belleville is also the setting for the Bastille Day celebrations on July 13th, where residents are invited to a large collective picnic in the castle park, followed by entertainment and fireworks. This popular and friendly celebration is another highlight of the Gif-sur-Yvette festive calendar.
On June 21st, Gif-sur-Yvette celebrates the Fête de la Musique with free concerts at the Château de Belleville, under the market hall, in Parc Levasseur, and in various neighborhoods of the town. The Gif-sur-Yvette National Music School actively participates in the event, allowing students to perform in public.
Gif-sur-Yvette is a unique commune that is home to major scientific research organizations (CEA, CNRS, Inria) and an active artistic community. This coexistence of science and art gives local cultural life a special dimension, fostering interdisciplinary projects and a sensitivity to creative innovation.
