Catalan Carnival and Rite of Passage inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage
The Fête de l'Ours (Bear Festival) of Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans is the third and final stage of the annual cycle of the Fêtes de l'Ours in the Haut-Vallespir region of the Pyrénées-Orientales. Held annually in late February or early March, this ancestral Catalan tradition blends a rite of passage with carnival in the village streets. The bear, accompanied by emblematic characters like the Monaca (a double-bodied funereal figure), emerges from a secret location and roams the streets before being captured by a hunter who recites 'la predica de l'Ós' in Catalan. After being shaved, the bear regains its human form and chooses a young woman to dance to the rhythm of the sardanes. Inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2022.
Each year, Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans, a village in the Haut-Vallespir renowned for its espadrilles and Catalan textile tradition, concludes the cycle of the three Fêtes de l'Ours inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This festival, held in late February or early March, combines a rite of passage with a carnival parade in an atmosphere that is both solemn and joyful.
The festival begins with a gathering in front of the Notre-Dame de la Sort church. The bear emerges from a secret location, accompanied by emblematic characters, including the Monaca, a double-bodied funereal figure who interacts with the crowd. Elderly couples use traditional objects to lure the bear towards the village's young women, in a symbolic game of seduction and danger.
After a chase through the streets, a hunter captures and chains the bear. This is followed by the predica de l'Ós, a poem in Catalan reciting the beast's misdeeds. The bear is then shaved, symbolically regaining its human appearance. The festival ends in joy: the bear, now human again, chooses a young woman from the assembly to dance to the sound of the sardanes, marking the victory of spring over winter.
Like its counterparts in Arles-sur-Tech and Prats-de-Mollo, the Fête de l'Ours of Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans has been inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list since November 29, 2022. It mobilizes the entire village community and forms an unbreakable link between generations.
