Homage to sailor-fishermen and celebration of the sea since 1933
The Fête de la Mer of Trouville-sur-Mer has been an institution since 1933, paying homage to sailor-fishermen and celebrating the strong bond that unites the town with the sea. Every summer, for two days, the festival features a mass in honor of those lost at sea, a solemn procession, a bagpipe parade, an exhibitors' village, and the departure of Trouville boats towards the open sea. This free and popular event brings together locals and visitors around Norman maritime tradition.
The Fête de la Mer de Trouville-sur-Mer, born in 1933 from a simple blessing of the sea, has become over the decades one of the most emblematic events on the Norman coast. Every year in the heart of summer, this festival pays a solemn tribute to the sailor-fishermen and celebrates the unbreakable link between Trouville and the ocean.
The Fête de la Mer takes place over two days. Saturday is dedicated to festivities and entertainment, with an exhibitors' village offering artisanal creations from the maritime world: jewelry, driftwood objects, saffron, and local products. Demonstrations by Aquadog rescue dogs punctuate the day.
Sunday takes on a more solemn character: a parade by the 51st Highland Memorial Scottish Pipe Band resonates on the quays from 9:30 AM, followed by a mass at the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church in honor of those lost at sea. A procession then leads to the memorial stele on the Jean-Claude Brize jetty, where an absolution is given offshore.
The most moving moment of the festival takes place in the late afternoon: the departure of the Trouville boats towards the sea, a maritime scene full of emotion that concludes the weekend of celebration. This procession of decorated boats, accompanied by floral tributes laid at sea, symbolizes respect and gratitude towards those who live from the sea.
The 2026 Fête de la Mer is expected in mid-August in Trouville-sur-Mer, with the traditional ceremonies honoring sailors, the exhibitors' village, and the departure of boats towards the open sea.
