About Fête de la Musique in Marseille
Every June 21, Marseille celebrates the Fête de la Musique: from the Old Port to Cours Julien, from Le Panier to the beaches, amateur musicians, music schools, and professional artists freely take over the streets, squares, and quays of the Phocaean city. Organized by the City of Marseille, the day is entirely free and kicks off the Marseille Summer.
The Fête de la Musique in Marseille
As everywhere in France since 1982, the Fête de la Musique transforms Marseille into an open-air stage every June 21. Music freely takes over public spaces, from late afternoon until the heart of the night, in all genres and for all audiences: rock, jazz, classical, rap, electro, reggae, and world music.
A celebration in all neighborhoods
Usually, the festival unfolds throughout all districts: open-air concerts around the Old Port, stages in Cours Julien, events in Le Panier and La Joliette, not to mention bars, music schools, conservatories, and cultural centers that open their doors. In Marseille, June 21 also marks the launch of the Marseille Summer, with a special «Voie est libre» operation that gives the Corniche back to pedestrians at night.
