About Fête de Piana

The Piana Festival is the patronal festival of the village of Piana, in Corse-du-Sud, celebrated annually on August 15th for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This religious and popular festival, rooted in Corsican tradition, brings together residents and visitors for a morning mass, a procession through the village, an aperitif offered by the municipality on the church square, and a fireworks display fired in the evening over Arone beach.

Organized jointly by the parish and the Piana town hall, the event is part of the calendar of major Assumption festivals that punctuate the Corsican summer. Piana, classified among The Most Beautiful Villages of France and famous for its calanques listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers an exceptional setting for this festival.

The Piana Festival, patronal festival of the Assumption

Every year on August 15th, the village of Piana celebrates its patronal festival on the occasion of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is one of the most important events in the commune, marking the heart of the summer season in this part of the Gulf of Porto.

A religious and popular festival

The day begins with a solemn morning mass at the Sainte-Marie church in Piana. In the late afternoon, a procession carries the statue of the Virgin through the village streets, accompanied by residents and local brotherhoods. The procession concludes on the church square, where the municipality offers an aperitif to everyone.

The Arone beach fireworks display

In the evening, around 10:30 PM, fireworks are set off over Arone beach, a few kilometers from the village. This pyrotechnic show, one of the most renowned on the west Corsican coast, attracts many spectators to the beach and bay every summer.

A festival in an exceptional setting

Piana is a village perched overlooking the Gulf of Porto, famous for its renowned Calanche de Piana, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and listed among The Most Beautiful Villages of France. The patronal festival takes on its full meaning in this ocher-red mineral landscape, between granite and the Mediterranean.

A living tradition

The Piana Festival is part of the long tradition of Corsican patronal festivals, where religion, culture, and village conviviality intertwine. In addition to the Assumption, the village's calendar of religious events also includes the Easter granitula led by the Confrérie de Saint-Antoine and an inter-brotherhood gathering on the last Sunday of July.
