The Donkey, Emblem of Berry Celebrated in Poulaines
For over forty years, the small village of Poulaines, nestled in the heart of Boischaut Nord in the Indre region, has dedicated an entire day to the donkey, an emblematic animal of the Berrichon region. The Fête des Ânes (Donkey Festival) is held every Easter Sunday and transforms this village of 888 inhabitants into a gathering place that attracts thousands of visitors from all over Berry and beyond.
Exceptional Competitions and Prestigious Breeds
The heart of the festival lies in the donkey and mule judging competitions, which bring together passionate breeders presenting the finest French breeds: the Baudet du Poitou with its characteristic long coat, the Grand Noir du Berry measuring at least 1.35 meters, the Cotentin donkey recognizable by its Saint Andrew's cross, as well as the Norman and Provençal breeds. These competitions highlight the diversity and beauty of French donkey breeding.
A Day of Entertainment for the Whole Family
Beyond the competitions, the Fête des Ânes offers a rich and varied program. Carriage rides and donkey rides delight young and old, while a brass band parades through the village streets to create a festive atmosphere. The local produce market allows visitors to discover the flavors of the Berrichon terroir, and a large lively flea market attracts bargain hunters from the morning.
A Country Meal and a Friendly Atmosphere
The country meal is a highlight of the day, bringing together locals and visitors for regional specialties in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The influx of visitors is such that the village parking lots overflow, and one sometimes has to walk a long way to reach the heart of the festival, testifying to the popular success of this unique event in Berry.
Living Heritage to Preserve
The Fête des Ânes de Poulaines actively contributes to the preservation of French donkey breeds and the promotion of traditional breeding in Berry. It demonstrates the deep attachment of the people of Berry to their rural heritage and to this animal that has long accompanied daily life in the countryside. It is also an opportunity to promote donkey trekking, an outdoor activity that appeals to more and more families.
