Biennial historical festival in the heart of the Aÿ-Champagne vineyards
For over 20 years, the Fêtes Henri IV have celebrated King Henri IV's passion for the wine of Aÿ, the ancestor of champagne. Every two years, on the first weekend of July, the people of Aÿ hand over the keys of their city to their good King Henri IV. A grand costume parade, street performances, music, crafts, gastronomy, and fireworks animate this festive and historical weekend in the heart of the Champagne vineyards.
The history of the Fêtes Henri IV is rooted in King Henri IV's love for the wine of Aÿ, the ancestor of champagne. The king's doctor advised him to drink Champagne wine, which was lighter than Burgundy, and Henri IV particularly enjoyed this nectar. To the Spanish ambassador who questioned him, the king replied: "And I, I am the lord of Aÿ and Gonesse", meaning the lord of good wine and good bread.
The highlight of the Fêtes Henri IV is the grand costume parade that winds through the streets of Aÿ. In 2025, the theme "Henri IV, All Panache!" offers a colorful and poetic journey with decorated floats on the themes of love, battle, gluttony, and celebration. The procession brings together 500 costumed participants, 20 horses, and 20 floats, accompanied by brass bands, wine brotherhoods, and delegations from twin towns.
Throughout the weekend, the streets of Aÿ-Champagne come alive with music, street performances, crafts, and gastronomy. Champagne houses open their cellars for tastings, and local producers offer their specialties. The weekend concludes with a grand fireworks display fired from the hillsides, illuminating the Champagne vineyards.
The Fêtes Henri IV also host a Grand Barrel Organ Festival, with magnificent barrel organs installed in the streets of Aÿ. Participants from all over France and abroad showcase these fascinating mechanical instruments, adding a unique musical and heritage touch to the event.
Aÿ-Champagne is one of the most prestigious communes in the Champagne vineyards. Thanks to the quality of its terroir and the commercial genius of its bourgeoisie, Aÿ built the reputation of this wine, which was then called "Vin d'Aÿ" before becoming "Champagne". The Fêtes Henri IV perpetuate this tradition and this historical link between the commune and the King of France.
